SH445 Size comparison, if anyone's wondering...

CT624 vs. SH445

Image

Carvin's SH445 is sometimes compared to a Gb ES335. Here's a size comparo to my Washburn 335 copy. The Carvin is a 25" scale and is 14.1" wide, a 'real' ES is 16.5" wide and a 24.75" scale, and the Washburn (also 24.75" scale) is slightly smaller than a 335: 16" wide and an inch shorter. Size difference aside, the Carvin is a much more solid, modern feeling instrument. (A true construction/tone comparison would take an entire page, not to mention me needing a real ES335 to compare. :D )

Coda-
Perfect photo for a comparo! Thanks :applause:
The 335 sized guitars are too big for my tastes ( I have two- an Epi Sheraton II, and a (surprisingly nice, Asian-made) Ibanez AS103 Artcore...both are on the big side :?
For a couple days I had an Epi 339 Ultra, and the body size of Carvins SH is closer to that scaled-down size of the 339... So, an SH (445 or 645  is on my bucket list...)
Great pictures, they're both beautiful, classy guitars, though the new, royal purple, Excaliber, is definately on the top step of the box :woot:
Got it:
HH2 satin Cherryburst flame, CT624 Orangebust flame, BOLT Kit in tung oil
5 "other" guitars: Epi, Fender, Gibson, Ibanez, PRS
6 amps, Mesa (2),Fender, Blackstar, Vox, Crate
Need it:
SC90, TL60, SH445, CS6 or CS624, V220, V3M212S

I spent a few hours plugged in and turned up this weekend, and I am smitten with the range of tones that is possible with this guitar. Almost all my time was spent on the clean channel of my Marshall JVM 50w amp, which makes the guitar just sing. I like the bridge and neck pickup equally, and my favorite tones are with both pickups selected and the bridge pickup set about 2 clicks hotter than the neck. The split coil sound is fresh and spanky without being harsh or too noisy. I'm also having a lot of fun throwing the pickups out of phase and then rolling one of the volumes up or down - you can get some wah-wah-ish filtered sounds out of it with funky harmonics, that gets even further funky when you detune slightly with the Bigsby.

Sunlight photos as promised!

Thanks, apedrape! Nice to hear from you. How's your hand-built carved top treating you these days? That one wrote the book on sweet looking!

Thanks coda, you are to kind. I've been busy with work and haven't had the time to chime in here as often as I would like. But I have been working on some more guitar projects that I hope to post here soon. the hand made guitar has been treating me good but not as good as my Carvins. :D I have to say, your 445 is a work of art. she's a beauty!

Wow Coda ... :coolpics:

Amazing photos. I love how the guitar is perfectly focused and the background is blurred. I don't know anything about photography or how you do that, but I love it. I didn't thing your guitar would pop even more in the sunshine, but it did!! She is such a beautiful guitar.

You're a very lucky man, and I'm glad you got to play it lots this weekend and exploring all the cool tones available to you.

Cheers,

Thanks guys! Excalibur is the perfect model for photos. She doesn't complain and both her sides are her 'good' side.

In a word: "AWESOME!"

I've been using it frequently for about a week and I haven't had any stability issues. The guitar is easy to get in tune and stays in tune. My bending is modest - no more than a tone downward and maybe a half tone up, which I feel is kind of at the Bigsby's limit. From a construction standpoint, I don't yank on it as hard as I might if it were a solid body. The access to the controls is a little blocked by the bar, but it doesn't bother me. The handle also neatly tucks 180 degrees away, so you can clear the space if it's bothering you.

Feel free to PM me if you have specific questions!

The traditional headstock certainly creates a more fluid balance with the stubby horns.
Carvin guitars: AC375, Cobalt 250, Bolt-T.
Carvin amps: Legacy I w/Mesa 2X12 Rectifier speaker cab, AG100D.

Honest to god, that is the most beautiful guitar I've ever seen. Period.
I may take some pointers from this guitar in my own next Carvin Build!

Thank you for the kind words, B'B'. Your aquaburst FG is absolutely beautiful as well! Mutual admiration is one of the driving forces that makes this board so cool. :)
