Bolt Plus kit wood suggestions?

Postby pluckme » Tue Aug 04, 2015 8:32 am

Hey folks. I'm trying to put together an order for a Bolt Plus kit and wanted to get a little feedback or suggestions on the wood options. I'm looking for a very balanced sounding rock/classic metal oriented instrument.

Right now I'm leaning towards a mahogany body, maple neck, rosewood fretboard, ss jumbo frets, wilkinson trem, locking tuners, and Kiesel passive humbuckers.

Is the mahogany body going to be that much warmer over the stock alder for a bolt-on neck instrument with a floating trem. I'm concerned that an alder body might not have enough low end beef. I've also heard some folks say that mahogany bodies and maple necks don't work well together. Never played this combo myself, but mahogany bodies with maple tops are everywhere. Not sure how well that compares though. Any thoughts?

I've got a Les Paul clone with a Duncan JB/Jazz set and an alder Strat with 3 single coils. I'm looking for something that sort of meets in the middle tone wise.

The alder body is fine. It seems like some pieces of alder are lighter or heavier than others.

The swamp ash body is usually heavier than alder, but again, not always. Weight is 7.6 lbs on the swamp ash bolt. I should weigh the alder one when I get a chance - that may tell the story.

My alder Strat is right at 8 lbs and is very resonant and loud unplugged. I like that a lot, but it is very bright even with a rosewood fretboard. My Les Paul on the other hand could be a little brighter and is a bit tubby sounding at times unless I run the bass low on my amp.

It is. 8) The Man makes a great point, too, in a grand fashion. I'm thinking Black Limba, myself, but I already have a nice koa. :wall: Decisions!
