Skully's Bolt Kit Thread

Postby skully13a » Fri Nov 20, 2015 11:07 am

Howdy. .... :D this will be my build thread, displaying my progress, or lack thereof.
So now, let's get to it!

The kit!

The neck!
It starts boring, but should improve in time.

Same here, It's actually surprising how little kits are actually on the BBS. I'd think there would be a lot more posted.

I'm interest in seeing it. I still want to do one but I keep putting it off now in hope for a 24 fret bolt kit.

Well, I started with the neck. ...sanded to 800. So far, so good...whoa, that's becoming like my mantra. .That maple sands out nice......
The plan is to tung oil the back, paint the front of the headstock. More later, as progress is made....it'll be in fits & starts, as I'm in the Oil Patch now, at work. Stupid job.
Also sanding out the body so I can fill the grain & sand it again. meh.

Got the headstock primed & ready for some color! Probably be a couple days, though...we'll see.
Body is sanded & grainfilled.

Bonehead edit: Here's another pic of the body after grainfill but before priming....it's actually got some cool lines. Kind of a shame to cover it up but, there's already a process underway....press on!

Reshot the headstock.....it will keep for awhile, until I get a clear coat on it. Btw, that color is Crown Royal Purple.
Started priming the body!!

8)

Yeah, progress is slow, but then I work 6 day weeks, too. Meh.

Well....8 coats later. Headstock is ready to clearcoat.

Shot some paint on the body. ...it'll take a wee bit longer...
I'll even it up as I progress.
I actually blew it by sanding the color.....don't sand metallic colors. You'll be fixing it. Meh. Learning process for sure. :wall:
Check it out....I put the secrecy shroud over it when I'm out working....hey, I'm working on this in a trucking shop

I actually had to pull all my stuff out of there. Too hard to maintain a dust free, or mostly free space. It's North Dakota after all.....I'll try to make some progress over the next 5 weeks, and finish her up at home. I reckon I can finish the headstock in my shack, that way I can get the neck done. :x

What kind of paint are you using, Polyurethane, acrylic, Laquer?

Nitro lacquer, man.

On that note, I got 3 coats of clear coat on the headstock, so I've got it gassing off, sanding tomorrow night. Then do it again.........

What are you using to fill the body (epoxy, ColorTone, Aqua Clear, etc)? In my experience sanding sealer and primer is not enough for a high-gloss finish and tend to lean towards Aqua Clear.

I used oil based grain fill from Reranch...3 coats....then 2 coats of sand seal, then 2 coats white primer....then the purple!
Image
Still needs a couple clear coats......then polish forever.

Thanks guys......yeah, I think it's pretty cool.Crown Royal Purple. It'll be even better once I get the pearloid pickguard on to set it off. It's a fun process, if a bit tedious. Pretty rewarding, though.
