Coda's Black Friday Black Limba Bolt Kit

Postby Coda » Wed Nov 25, 2015 2:42 pm

Not enough of these threads? Word!

I've romanced the idea of a Carvin kit pretty much since I started getting the catalog, way back when it was printed on paper. I've always enjoyed the build threads here on the BBS, and I've been looking for an excuse to take a crack at it. When the family asked me what I wanted for the holidays I didn't really have an answer. Then I saw this:

Image

Yup, an extra $30 off, free Luminlays and free Kiesel pickup upgrades!

Here's what I'm getting:

BOLT ON GUITAR KIT w/ VINTAGE TREM (My first vintage trem - I already have a Floyd and a Bigsby so this rounds out the stable.)

MAPLE NECK & BLACK LIMBA BODY

I REALLY like this black limba bolt in the gallery. I don't have any limba in my arsenal - and I've seen some really nice black limba guitars coming off the assembly line lately - so I thought I'd give it a try!

Image

I was going to get the H33 headstock in plain maple, and then I decided to upgrade to the black limba headstock venier because, well, just because! I got stuck in a mental loop... reversed headstock... nah, not reversed. Etc. Then I second guessed myself two or three or ten more times and kept looking at the online gallery. As much as I thought I wanted the pointy, my eye kept stopping on this guitar:

Image

There was something unique yet familiar about the carved top headstock on a bolt. I can't explain it, I just like it - alot. (Actually, I have a couple of pointy headstock guitars, and I get OCD when I lean them against a wall and they spin. Not so with the CT!) And so my order stands as:

CARVED TOP HEADSTOCK
BLACK LIMBA HEADSTOCK OVERLAY

More goodies added...

SDL LUMINLAY SIDE DOTS (Free Black Friday offer!)
STF STAINLESS STEEL FRETS (Med-jumbo)

I'm getting the (standard) rosewood board with (also standard) pearl dot inlays and (yup, standard) silver hardware.

I was going to do 3 A11 single coils, but I thought I'd ask if I could get the Lithium singles and they said Yes! (It might take a while longer to get them - no worries.)

KIESEL LITHIUM SINGLE COIL PICKUPS (3)

Hardware upgrades:

STRAPLOCKS BY DUNLOP
Carvin PREMIUM LOCKING TUNERS

Bling 'n such:

CHROME KNOBS w/ WHITE PEARL INLAY
WHITE PEARLIOD TUNER BUTTONS
PICKGUARD WHITE PERLOID
Truss Rod Cover White Pearloid

-----------------------------------------

So that's the plan. Can't wait to get it and start posting some pics!

Sounds great! I can't wait to see your progress. I just took advantage of the sale and purchased the B40 kit! I've wanted to do this for years, I can't believe I finally just did it!

^^ Cool! I can't wait to see these kit builds coming together. Tipover, you should really join us and get that k40 kit now. Let's make a pact to post lots of progress shots. Maybe we can jump start the kit market. 8)

So I don't know if this is blasphemy, but I am thinking about carving up my bolt kit body and doing a little modernizing/weight reducing. I've been looking at my Bolt+ lately with the eye of a crazed plastic surgeon thinking, "hmm, I can do a little trimming here, maybe a tuck (or bevel) there..."

One thing that i definitely want to try is to recess the neck mounting plate. I wonder if anyone has done this?

I've not seen anyone do that......are you thinking of just going the thickness of the plate? Doesn't seem like much. hmmmm.

I definitely will post pictures! I'm interested in seeing what kind of body shape you come up with. I think it's great to make alterations, it's kind of like being a luthier.

Edit:this is the thread...unfortunately, the pics are gone. :(

Yup, just the thickness of the plate. I don't think it's a major deal, but rather a nice touch that will give the heel joint, well, a nice touch!

Yes! I used to have a wood shop, but now I just have a small 'fixit space.' Having Carvin making most of the wood chips for me is perfect. I can then go in and do a little personalizing.

By the way, I'm thinking of spraying water- or alcohol-based transparent dyes for color, and then finishing it up with an oil or varnish. I'm thinking it would be like the Kiesel color treated fret boards. Has anyone unlocked the mystery of what that process is? I want to keep the wood fairly natural but I don't want the dye coming off. Any suggestions?

Thank you Spud! Bummer that the pics have disappeared into the vapor... but a cool read. I didn't think about the loss of depth of the mounting screws, but i'm glad the OP did not have a problem. Worse case scenario is I could make the screws shorter. Heck of a lot easier than making them longer. :D

Found this in the archives. It's kind of what I'm thinking for a body color.

Oh, dang...both that and the first one look smashing. With the right coloring, it almost looks like Koa.

I thought that, too. Especially with the first one up top. That example really has chatoyancy. 8)

Here is a youtube video dyeing a guitar body using water and inexpensive wood dye. There are a number of videos showing how they do this on guitars and woodworking videos to make bowls and other dishes.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXOoGFkzuco

Here is the dye kit he mentions in the video. $15 for 5 colors (red, blue, yellow, black and brown and they can be mixed to make a custom color.
