Postby Coda » Thu Mar 31, 2016 2:40 pm

I just got the word that my Bolt body and neck are shipping tomorrow! This is a rebuild from a kit I ordered in November, which I returned because the wood grain and I didn't bond. (I held on to the parts.)

So I take it that you never got around to check out the Lithium single coils?

PS. Correct move there, to change the body when you know you wouldn't bond with the visuals of it.

How long did it take to get a new Black Limba body delivered/sent?

Hi Bredo - the rebuild took about 6 weeks. I didn't try the pickups yet. I would have if I had another 'pickguard' guitar to try it in. This one will be my first. :)

Hey Ape, you read my mind! (Except I'm looking out right now and it's snowing and the weather says 27°!) I'm still on the fence whether I'll do the oiled hand rubbed thing or go the extra mile with the spray & buff route. It all depends on what the wood is telling me...

Tomorrow's the day that it's supposed to arrive. Very excited!

Thinking about a violin burst on Ash T-body with that antique [just slightly] yellowed flamed maple neck on my kit if I can ever get around to it . . . :wall:

You are right though that you really do need to just wait and see what your particular Limba is telling you?

:| I am in a quandary with this bolt project. When the first body and headstock overlay fell short of what I was envisioning, K/C was very courteous, and even encouraging about doing the rebuild. When I sent the first one back they asked me to include a letter saying what I was looking for, and I said, '...a more figured black limba. Specifically, I am hoping to see more defined stripes and contrast, where the figuring is consistent across the entire surface.'

(Admittedly, I am spoiled by seeing so many incredible examples of stripy black limba.)

I received the new body (and my old neck that was sent back to be rebuilt, but wasn't), and I am decidedly 'meh' about it. While it's more consistent across the surface, it isn't stripy as I had hoped for.

Once again, I've talked to K/C and they have been very sincere and accommodating, offering me another rebuild or a refund. I'm on the fence whether I should try black limba #3, or maybe change the body wood to something more predictable. (Swamp ash? Koa?)

For the curious, here's the first body:

And here's the rebuild:

One minute I'm feeling trite for being fussy, and then the next minute I'm imagining an awesome body and headstock with figuring like you see in the neck pocket of the first body. Opinions are welcomed... :D

You may want to try wetting it down with water or something else to simulate what the wood will look like with a gloss finish. You may find you like it a lot better.

I doubt you'll be happy with it. You've got something in your head and this isn't it. I'd probably go for body #3, as annoying as that is. :(

I wonder what they do with returned kit rebuilds  . Finish them and it goes in GIS, set them aside for the next time someone orders one?

Though I think #2 would look OK with a deep clear on it, this is also why I decided NOT to do a Limba guitar. There are those absolutely amazing ones we have all seen but there are a LOT of meh and even MEH! Second one almost looks a little bit walnut-ee and again I think it might even surprise you with some deep clear.

But, it does need to float your boat.

I just stayed with Ash and flamed maple on my tri-pup T-body. I SERIOUSLY need to get this done [before rigor mortise sets in] . . . like all my other projects!

Thanks for the comments guys!

I gave it a good hose-down with a spray per @MichaelGA's suggestion. I have to admit that it took on a whole new life - darkening and adding contrast. It looked more like walnut than black limba, which was a big surprise.

But alas, I have visions of stripes in my head, which this one doesn't deliver. Honestly, the water trick really made me like it a WHOLE LOT more... but I still don't like the headstock overlay. So I think my mind is set that we'll do build #3. I have a good feeling about it.

KennyM - I was wondering the same thing about the kit returns. It would be cool if they finished these bodies and put them in GIS. ('Tho I might kick myself for returning them when I see what they turned into.)

@canon_mutant - I love the book match on your swamp ash body!

honestly, I like the first one you had better than the second
