It's coming along!
Lessons learned:
- Use a lower grit sandpaper (400ish) after tung oil coat dries to remove excess and really smooth it out.
- Yeah, 0000 steel wool is what you want to do after the last coat. (Just like the instructions say :)

Slowly but surely coming along. The instructions did say one coat of oil in the control cavity. I'd suggest none since the foil tape didn't want to stick to it.

Coming together great, I wish I would have remembered the cavity thing. I didn't do mine after seeing how the foil went in. But mine being the high gloss tung oil finish it probably would have been ok.

Holy Canoli! That thing is completely droolworthy already! Nice job getting it together, and my god did they send you some really nicely figured pieces of ash. Looks like it will be a phenomenal axe.

I love threads like this--they inspire me to build my own which I've seriously been considering doing.
Carvin Weaponry:
1985 DC150K (koa) Stereo, M22N/M22SD w/black hardware.
1985 100 Watt X Amp 2 x 12 combo (XV212) upgraded w/ 2 Vintage 30's
...and other gear.

Really enjoying the thread!

DIY was the norm for most things when I was a kid... something over the years changed when I wasn't looking(!), so seeing folks today build kits and such gives me a warm fuzzy :) Also makes me want to take on another project now that I've got some spare time

Two questions:
- Does K/C pre-cut the nut for the strings?
- Will the frets need to be leveled/dressed?

Don't forget to put your initials in the neck pocket ;)

Two answers: (based on my parts neck experience, it would be the same for kits)
- Yes - they cut each slot to the same height, but you may need to cut it further for your choice of strings, or just to set the action at the nut
- Nope, not right away at least. They come leveled and polished. But after having it settle in on your guitar you may find that it needs some leveling. It's just the nature of things, can't be avoided. Warmoth and other parts builders say the same thing.

I got it put together but it hums something fierce. Everything works and makes sound but it is noisy :(

Double check all you conceptions that they are soldered good, no cold joints that may not be making a good conection. Also make sure all grounds are good the same way. If you have a meter you can usually check most of that and the meter set on ohms should go to zero or real close unless your measuring through a pickup or pot but try to just measure from one end to the other of each wire. If you used small wire nuts for the pickups make sure the wires are twisted together good before putting the nut back on. Just some things to check.

Kiesel's tech, Albert, and I went through a long email session but the buzz never got resolved.

I replaced the 5 way lever with a 3 and all is good! Still frustrated by the 5 way lever...
I have two push/pull pots arriving which I'll install this week. That will give me the 3 way lever plus coil taps.

The fingerboard / frets are perfect. Carvin's fret work is the best I've ever played.

The nut is almost perfect. The high E string is just a little higher than I'd like but it's low on my priority list right now.

Bad switch? I've heard of them wearing out but bad from new, I guess anything can happen. Glad you got that worked out and you're getting what it takes to split the pups. If you don't like them you can always put mini switches in to make it easy error to switch on the fly.
Looking good!

Yeah I can't imagine it's the switch. But Albert and I went through everything and it always buzzed. I'm sure it was something I did :)

But the 3 way lever worked fine. They're sending me a new 5 way lever though!

Their customer service does rock!

I'll post more pictures soon.

Alright! I got the 3 way lever and push pull pots installed.
Is there any way to wire it to change which coil is on when split?
Right now, when I pull the pots up the coil with the hex screws are selected.

Thanks!Image

Hey all... I decided to leave the coil splits as is - that way I can raise the hex screws to increase the single coil output.

Everything is up and running... Although the allen wrench for the bridge saddles is too big. UGH!

But the guitar plays and sounds great!

Thank you! The Lithium pickups sound really good - both humbucker and split.

Yes they are great pickups, I put them in my SH60 and like it a lot better than the S22's.
