I'm wanting to recess the neck plate on by BK50 so I really appreciate the tip of using a blade to smooth the bottom. I was contemplating the wood chisel vs. router with template options and will probably do it manually now.

The bevel looks good too and I hope it works with the burst you have planned.
A little reshaping on the bass body is also planned...
Seems like we think alike a bit. Keep up the good work and the updates coming.

Thanks John! I look forward to getting some color on it and keeping the project going.

Here's a couple of tips I found helpful, if you decide to do the neck plate mod on your bass... With the neck attached and firmly bolted, I traced the plate with a pencil as a guide. But because of all the inside curves, I decided not to cut the walls of the route with a chisel. Instead I made several passes (with the neck plate attached serving as a guide) with a fresh X-acto knife.

Image

This worked really well to sever the end grain, and to cut the tight curved corners. With this cut line well established, I then removed the neck and hardware.

Image

When I started with the chisels I was able to go up to the x-acto cuts with really good precision. Since the x-acto doesn't cut too deep, I made several more freehand passes with it as I got deeper into the route. Hope that helps. I look forward to seeing pics of your bass project!

Brilliant! Yes, very helpful and much appreciated.

What did you use on the bevel? Rasp, Sander, Chisel, dead snake maybe?
Just being silly, but I am curious.

Dead snake.

:laughhard: :laughhard: :laughhard:

I have a bench top belt/disk sander. Where the belt goes over the roller it acts like a 2 1/2" spindle sander. I used that.

I was inspired by one of Jeff's videos where he free handed a bevel. Saw it and knew I had to try it. :)

Exactly the tool and inspiration I plan to exploit.
Looking forward to seeing your finished build!

Oh, and I like the recessed plate, too. Very cool touch. 8) 8) 8)

Delayed reply...Thanks, skully! Progress report is that I've made no new progress. :( Not sitting idle, though. My honey-do list just doesn't have "work on that guitar" anywhere near the top. :wall: Soon, I promise!

I popped into this thread this morning because I had a dream last night... Jeff came over to help me finish the guitar because he was concerned it was taking too long. He brought a portable spindle sander and asked me if it was OK if he free-handed a bunch of bevels on the body. I told him to have at it, but I don't know how it came out because the dream derailed and went in a totally different direction.

It's like we're living parallel lives with the previous exchange about the heal plate and now the list of other duties that prevent working on our kits.

I actually just put mine all back in the box a couple of weeks ago to protect it while I worked on a large home project. That's almost done so I actually pulled the body out last night and sketched on it a bit to help visualize some of the shaping it's gonna get.

Your dream is hilarious, though. I've not yet been visited by Jeff sporting woodworking tools.
Sounds like you need to spend some time on it. LOL

Rebuilding a deck (as I am) per chance? That would be weird but cool.

No deck. That would've been cool and weird.

Window install here. 4 of those bad boys that are 4.5 feet square in the Living room.

Substantial wall damage under the North one added a couple of days as I'm doin all I can to never have to repeat this process.

Vinyl windows, Vinyl sill plates and nose molding, Vinyl Brickmold around the outside. About a case and a half of caulk and all boards for the new jambs painted on all sides before being installed. Had to remove and reinstall the basement window in a window well under that same north one. Still have to build a cover for the window well, but all else is done but for some cleanup. LOVE the new windows but dang!

The window company was going to install the new window into the old window frames. I just couldn't wrap my head around that. It would have cost me double for that as well. Not this hard headed ol' boy!

Hope your deck is about wrapped up so you can get to what's really important!

APE!!! Don't leave me, bro! It won't be long now, I promise.

The deck project is going well but S - L - O - W. 90° + weather and life in general has made the project stretch out for 2 months. But I'm doing it with my son as a summer project and it's been a really good bonding experience. :)

Here's some pics for fun... (Hey, this is a Builder's forum, right?)

"Before..."

This was once pretty nice, made from cedar and stained/painted/repaired half a dozen times. It was probably in its prime 25 years ago.

Image

This was about all that was worth saving:

Image

Bigger, stronger, better (I hope).

Image

And finally - today - all I have left to do is the railings. Wa-hoo! :D :D :D

Image

Which means...

Yes...

I can return to my Bolt kit!

...And now back to our regularly scheduled program.

Final pre-finish sanding is done and the guitar is masked. I am planning to get some color on it this weekend. (I'm going to attempt a hybrid sunburst effect, with translucent dyes to let the grain show through.) Ready to go... :D

That deck looks fantastic!!
Can't wait to see the finish on the guitar as well. Sounds so cool!

Keep the updates coming!

I wouldn't want to build a guitar out of it, but for a deck it's really nice to work with.

Railings at last!

Image

And a little bit of guitar progress. The neck is all swaddled and the headstock is masked. Ready for the spray booth.

I think that Limba's going to respond nicely to what you've got planned. Good to see it coming along!
