Coda's Kit - Black Limba Bolt - the SQL

Postby Coda » Tue Jun 28, 2016 12:18 pm

Big thanks to Ricardo in Kiesel's Customer Service department for getting me some awesome figured black limba on my new bolt kit! I'm looking forward to getting this project under way. For those that remember, this is a rebuild of a bolt I received that I didn't bond with. They also rebuilt the neck for me so the headstock overlay matches the new body. Since they were doing the rebuild, I asked for no inlays this time, instead of the MOTS dots.

Image

I sprayed the top down with water to pop the grain and took this photo in sunlight. I'm really liking what I see. :D

Image

I'm thinking of doing a classic sunburst with transparent dyes and then finishing with tru-oil. I'm still in the research/sample stage so that's subject to change. Here are the specs:

BOLT ON GUITAR KIT w/ VINTAGE TREM
MAPLE NECK & BLACK LIMBA BODY
CARVED TOP HEADSTOCK
BLACK LIMBA HEADSTOCK OVERLAY
SDL LUMINLAY SIDE DOTS
STF STAINLESS STEEL FRETS (Med-jumbo)
Rosewood board - no inlays
silver hardware.
KIESEL LITHIUM SINGLE COIL PICKUPS (3)
STRAPLOCKS BY DUNLOP
Carvin PREMIUM LOCKING TUNERS
CHROME KNOBS w/ WHITE PEARL INLAY
WHITE PEARLIOD TUNER BUTTONS
PICKGUARD WHITE PERLOID
Truss Rod Cover White Pearloid

Looks good.
In my quest for something all Black Limba, a Bolt+ kit came to mind (would have to be a Bolt kit these days). Some day ...

I like the limba, but that rosewood is also super tastey.

That's some beautiful wood! I also love the rosewood and I think it looks even better without any fret markers. I will definitely try that when I build another kit.

I want to do something unique/creative with this kit and my mind is bursting with ideas... :wall: I have some finishing supplies on order so I'm playing in Photoshop for now, where I can get crazy without messing up. Once you start removing real wood, "undo" isn't as easy an option.

Pic of the day: About another 1/16" to go on the neck plate route until it sits flush.

Image

(Since the recessed neck plate lessens the distance to the neck, I need to remember to grind down the tips of mounting screws so I don't cut into the under side of the fret board.)

Lots of pics today! I made some good progress.

The neck plate route is complete. All done by hand... tedious, but I'm happy with the outcome. (If I had more than one to do I'd use a router and make a guide.)

Image

To get the bottom smooth and level I made a scraper out of a razor blade. If you take a fresh blade and run it 2 or 3 times along the shaft of a hardened steel screwdriver it will make a burr on one side of the blade, which is super sharp. It works great, and the tiny size allowed me to work inside of the small route.

Final flush fit:

I've decided to do a simulated body binding by masking the natural limba, which will be surrounded by the black of the burst. The problem with Photoshop is that once I start noodling around, I have a hard time stopping. After seeing the comp, I realized it also needed a bevel on the top horn...

Nice work!

I'm wanting to recess the neck plate on by BK50 so I really appreciate the tip of using a blade to smooth the bottom. I was contemplating the wood chisel vs. router with template options and will probably do it manually now.

The bevel looks good too and I hope it works with the burst you have planned.
A little reshaping on the bass body is also planned...
Seems like we think alike a bit. Keep up the good work and the updates coming.
