Just got my bolt kit! have some questions!

Postby DrorA6 » Sat Feb 25, 2017 6:40 am

Hey guys! :)

Just got my BOLT Kit, black limba body and walnut neck with zebrawood fretboard!
This thing looks amazing!!! :))
it's the first time im building a kit, i have tried to do a project with a cheap guitar and it came out just ok, but i have learned from this experience what NOT to do! haha

i know the first thing is to sand everything with a 400 grit sandpaper to smooth it all out.
after that i want to do a clear gloss finish (with rust oleum X2 series spray can) and tung oil the whole neck.

1. do i need to get some sealer before spraying the clear coats? or does the spray will do the trick?
2. what do i do with the neck pocket and the part of the neck that is attached to it? leave it like this? or just put tung oil?
3. the zebrawood fretboard need some treatment? (tung oil) or it can be left as is?

For some reason i can't seem to upload any pictures so i'll figure something out and post later!

Howdy! You're gonna have a blast, and end up with a fine guitar.
I would seal it. Reranch sells a fine oil based sanding sealer. That's what I used on mine.
I masked off the neck pocket while I was working on it, but tung oiled the entire neck(except the headstock, which I painted).
The fretboard can be left as is, unless you want to tung oil it. It won't hurt either way.
Good luck & have fun! :soapbox: 8)

I dunno about Rustoleum. Maybe one of these other guys can tell you. I got mine from reranch.com
There is also a lot of good info on the website.

I tried googling "rustoleum sealer spray" and all I got was flexible rubber waterproofing/anti-leak spray. I definitely wouldn't use that!

Thanks for the answers guys!

i decided to coat the entire body + neck with tung oil for the sake of simplicity.

just wondered, if i would like to make a gloss lacquer finish in the future, will it be possible to sand
the tung oil and apply the gloss?

can't wait to get it started already! i will take some pictures of the process and post here when i'm done!

All tung is the way to go! You are going to love the feel of that walnut bolt neck, I have one myself. I'd love to see some pics of this, sounds like some amazing woods.

Yes, you can resand and refinishing, while not super easy, is not that hard to do. Tung oil doesn't penetrate deeply so it's quickly sanded off. It just doesn't seem quick then. Like always.
Some sweet lines on that body, and the board. That will be a good looking guitar. 8) Makes me want to get another one.

If you use an oil-based poly (instead of water-based), you wouldn't even need to sand it first...although working with it isn't quite as easy as dry times are much much longer. With water-based you MIGHT be able to get away with it, but it's better to avoid it.

Some people will use an oil like a Danish oil for color, then put a poly over it...but danish oil is a but different than plain tung oil finish...

To clarify, I was talking about the clearcoat over the oil.
