Can you use alcohol based dyes over a tung oil finish ?
OK so i have a bolt neck that i had kiesel finish with tung oil about two years ago my question is can i use alcohol based dyes like Angelus leather dyes over the tung oil without any significant problems or would i have to sand off the tung oil to expose the wood grain my plan is to dye it red then either clear coat over that or use tung oil as a finish thanks in advance.

You would have to sand down to the bare wood to dye your guitar. Those angelus leather dyes work great! Very strong colors!

I don't know. An internet search may reveal other methods.

Sanding is really the only way. It doesn't penetrate deeply, though.

Good call. But just to let you know, sanding the tung oil off the whole neck wouldn't take you long at all. Start with ~80 grit to get the finish off, then maybe 150 and finish up with something in the 300 range to smooth it back up and you should be done in 30 minutes. Then you can apply whatever finish you want. With painted gloss necks there's so much more stuff to get through.
