Vintage (1980) Hagstrom Super Swede

Postby Doctor Turn » Thu Jul 25, 2019 3:56 pm

My 1970's humbucker driven Hagstrom hunt is complete. 2 double cuts, a semihollow, a Swede standard, and a Super.. plus a modern 3 x P90 Super and the Northen handmade Super thrown in for good measure.

Some tentative thoughts... this guitar is probably the longest sustaining and heavily resonant guitar I've ever played in my life. It literally almost tickles against my abdomen and arms when I play it because it vibrates so severely when I play it. I strike open notes and it just sustains forever and ever in a way that dwarfs even the koa in my set neck solid koa old Carvin, and that thing sustains for weeks.

I'm sure it has a lot to do with the incredible long tenon set neck pocket.. This is a 1979 mahogany issue with the neck pup out.. one thing we can say is this is NOT a gibson lol:
Image
the overall beast that it is:
Image

It's just an incredibly musical and cleverly constructed guitar. The pickups are fabulous--they went with Alnico V's on these Supers vs the Alnico II's on the Standard Swedes, HIIN, and Vikings.. one would imagine because of the splitters requiring a little more output when they notch down to single coil.. among the first guitars to have this feature and deffo the first to put it the LP on the long scale so the splitting shifts the axe into an authentic Tele sound.

I can say the following: the zero fret affects the sustain endlessly.. open notes go on forever.
In humbucker mode this guitar eats the Northen for breakfast. In overall construction, this guitar is superior to the Northen, which itself is superior to even the best Gibby custom shop R9's/8's/0's. It's such a clever and unique machine with so many wild one-off features you'll find on nothing else. Not for nothing are these beasts so rare and representative of the Swedes at the tippy top of their craft.

In split coil mode, the Northen (Alnico II designed by Johan Lundgren to mimic the vintage Custom 58's) sounds more like an authentic Tele.

The Northen has superior splitter features with two push pulls, as opposed to the single mini switch on the vintage which limits the options. The two push pulls cover every permutation, whereas the single mini switch is 1) up = neck split, 2) middle, both bucker, 3) bridge split. That's it. You can only split one at a time, so you can't split both when the pup selector is in the middle.

But the guitar is ferocious, just an outrageously clever improvement on the LP in just about every way. Verrrrrry wide neck, and yet very thin in terms of profile. Took some getting used to.

The guitar is just magical going through the Carr.. through anything actually. I wish there were more of these floating around, so folks could appreciate how unique they play, were conceived, and executed with such care.

Great family portrait! What a difference a few years makes. :)
That Viking is a wonderful contrast to the rest of the siblings. A true Swedish Natural Blond. (Good call on that decision) :applause:

I didn't realize the Super Swede was chambered with a top. Is that the case with the others as well? How much chambering does it have?

I really don't know on the hollowed out area by the neck pickup. I don't know if it continues down by the bridge.. I honestly had no idea these pockets existed before I saw the pics of that red mahogany one! I do know that mine is a good bit lighter than I expected it to be. It was an unexpected surprise, because they're known to be heavy.. but then again I'd say the majority of them are made of all maple rather than mahogany like mine... And maple guitars are notoriously heaaavy.

But at the same time this is an old growth hog/ebony axe, so old wood is of course a great deal lighter than regrowth crop wood, which is high in mineral content and moisture left from rushed production.

Will hopefully be getting around to some sounds to post of this beast run thru the Carr Mercury V (and maybe some X100B 6L6 cleans) this weekend. Love this guitar so much.

Surprise surprise.. a friend of mine from one of the Hag groups is selling an immaculate 1981 all maple tri-color tobacco burst, but it fades to the more traditional Gibby yellow because of the maple top on maple body.. the price is extremely fair considering what it is:

Here..

Interesting that the maple top and back are two piece (actually the back looks like "multi-piece" like some of the old curly maple Carvin DC160's from the late set neck era). My mahog edition is a one piece top and back.. my guitar was just an atomic score all around.

Nice Score. Congratulations!!
Any idea if that has chambering? Like Doc's................Doc?
How's the weight? My Maple V220 is heavy, but sustains wonderfully. I suspect yours does the same.
You can't see me, but I'm giving a Big Thumbs Up!!!

Curious how you like your axe Spiral!

Guys I haven't forgotten about a sound demo. Wait until you hear this thing.. this sucker is just amazing. It does that Fat Tele sound that the old 57-60 LP's did so well. Probably better actually. Amazing the diff that long neck tenon makes as well.

I'll get it up here within the next couple of days.
