GAS strikes

Postby Cynical » Tue Sep 12, 2017 12:31 pm

So, I ran into an amp and cab a few weeks ago that I instantly felt "WANT!" towards... and it was more money than I could really justify spending to myself on a luxury.

My willpower only held out for a few weeks. Last night, I spent $4000 and ordered a new amp and cab. Sadly, no store had both (which is sort of surprising; you'd think that if you're carrying a certain amp, the matching cab would be high on your list of priorities, and vice-versa?!?!), so I had to get them from two different stores. The amp should be here on Thursday or Friday; the cab, some time next week. When it all gets here, I'll go ahead and take a few cell phone pics and reveal exactly what my neighbors' new reason for hating me is...

But until then, I think I'll just keep everyone in suspense and listen to the sounds of bells on the horizon, unless anyone wants to hazard a guess as to what heavy loud boxes are coming to my house soon. :stir:

I've seem some GORGEOUS Mesa amps and cabs in a Claro Walnut box that were around there.

To be fair, the cab is about $1200 of that (which is pretty typical for a well-built 4x12 with good speakers).

@spudmunkey -- good guess, but nope. I like the sound of Mesa Marks when other people are playing them, but I've never been able to dial them in myself.

Nope. It's high gain, and fairly modern voiced.

Nothing digital in it. Geographically, a lot of your earlier guesses were closer.

HUGE hint: KT88 power section.

Yes, and apparently some pretty good ones. Pete Thorn has a signature amp with them that's supposedly awesome.

Yep! Can't wait to get it. Just got my tracking number for both packages, and found out they'll both be here on Thursday... can't wait!

IT'S HERE.

The cab is probably a bigger upgrade than the head. Not to say the head isn't really nice -- it is -- but I got the head a bit before the cab, and had about 30 minutes to play it through my old Marshall cab before the UberKab came in... and man, playing through the UberKab was like night and day. So much more punch, it's unbelievable.

The amp is a bit weird to dial in (I don't think I've ever had my treble dialed below 5 before!), but once you get it there, it's great. Thick, ultra-saturated, but with enough bite to have some aggression and balls, it's the amp I always wish a Dual Recto sounded like.

Thanks for posting your story as it puts my GAS in perspective. $800 for a PRS Sonzera 20 no longer seems so severe - almost downright pedestrian! Congrats on your new rig!

I wasn't planning on posting this publicly (it's a recording of a song I just finished writing about 2 days ago, so I'm totally under-rehearsed on it and making more mistakes than I am correct notes -- also, the jack on my Ultra V went out *right* after it was recorded, and you can hear it getting a bit flaky as the recording goes on [said Ultra V just got taken to the local repair shop to get fixed; luckily, there's a great one literally about 5 minutes from my house]), but since you asked: http://www.mediafire.com/file/2vgqfe6e6 ... ample.flac

The gain on this is dimed. No kidding; it's all the way up. It's amazing how well this amp holds up under truly stupid amounts of distortion.

One SM57 can't hope to capture what it's like to stand near this thing... even with the volume less than a third of the way up, I can feel the floor shaking when I play. It's unreal.
