It wasn't my fault, honest.

The story is long, the guitar seemed newer than new. The local store that had it was selling it for a ridiculously low price along with a Carvin amp (that I wasn't fortunate enough to get - my friend got that amp actually) along with the case which had all of the case candy and paperwork.

Image

It appears the person who commissioned it (who was commissioning the same thing I would have ordered had I gotten the money together) asked for some special features - the same ones I would have requested had I known it was possible to get a Holdsworth headstock on an ST300. SS frets, Holdsworth headstock and neck profile, flametop with matching head, etc.

I tried the guitar out and wasn't sure about the Wilkinson. I've been a Floyd Rose player since the 1980s and am very familiar with their care and feeding. I first saw this guitar on Febuary 7th purely by chance. And I slept on it for something like ten days but the darn thing kept worming its way into my consciousness.

Money was tight so I kept going "nah, I'll let that one go". But by chance a friend of mine was buying his first guitar on Saturday and at the same store. I tried it again. Crap. This has to be mine. The whole thing about the ST300 body (which I'd wanted since I first started seeing them in the Carvin catalogs back in 1989 but was discontinued at some point and then reappeared). My first Carvin catalog probably came my way in 1977.

Image

Inside the case was all the "case candy", paperwork, warranty cards, everything. Whoever commissioned this guitar never bothered to play it (it's so minty it's got the "new guitar smell") as well as the little baggie for the case key, bag for the tremelo arm, and allen wrenches.

But the proof is in the pudding - ANY guitar can sound terrific thru a great amp in a store (swanky Budda rig anyone? Gimme a break).

Image

So I brought it home and plugged it into my rig (Mesa Boogie Stu Pre plus TC Electronic + Lexicon FX) and put this little track together:

Audio Demo - 8.9 MB
http://madsound.dyndns.org/guitars/carv ... 0_Demo.mp3

When I'm new to guitars I don't come shredding out of the gate - I like to get to know the guitar a little first.

It has a really nice singing lead voice so even though the neck is the fastest I've probably ever played I felt like letting that voice sing and only got slightly animated after the first section.

The clean parts is the guitar with volume swells with modulation, chorus and delay and the dirty parts is the Mesa lead mode with a little modulation and a little delay in spots.

Yeah, I'm sold.

Still loving my guitar, gave her a little polish and took a quick pic on the couch with a little sunshine on it:

As a funny side note, I'm working on eugene's trick bag as sort of an etude of sorts, I was messing around trying to get that last 5 fret bend to the high a and snapped my e string on the spot, I couldn't help but laugh.

I caught the reference. And I'm cool because of it.

Trying desperately to decide if I want to go with a reverse inline or holdsworth headstock on an ST.

I thought reversed was the way, but man those HHs have grown on me!

Whats up arahobob,
I replied in another thread about your headstock dilema and will reiterate that the pointy reverse(HR33 - 6-String Pointed Headstock Reverse 3+3) looks really good. I just unboxed my new ST300c at about 9p.m. last night and I'm just blown away with the build quality and the way all the features come together. I can't imagine Carvin getting any closer in regards to how I invisioned this build. I'm going to post some pics next week sometime.
A quick generic rundown on the build:
ST300c
Floyd Bridge(My first)
Walnut body(Clear coat only)/Walnut neck(Tung oiled)-Looks amazing!!!
Jumbo stainless frets
REVERSE POINTED 3+3 HEADSTOCK(Looks really metal on this axe!!!)
Blackburst edge
I had them move the volume/tone knobs way back where I like them
Rosewood board
C22J & C22B pickups, which I am quite taken by with my initial playtime

It took me 3 years to finally build one, and I have to say this axe far exceeds my expectations in terms of fit to finish and overall quality. I was a bit nervous as this was a non-exchanable build due to it being an option 50, but I think I made the right choice. The next few months will reveal whether or not the playability and tone measure up, but I can say right out of the box the set up, action, and tone seem to be exactly what I had hoped for. There seems to be some seroius mojo going on with this thing from the minute I started playing it! Let me know if you have any specific questions.

Any chance of a high resolution picture of that blue one suitable for use as a desktop? As nice as the fiery one is that blue one is MONSTROUS.

I'll post hi-res ones of mine if anyone wants them!

I was ready to get a DC600 w/ a standard reverse in-line headstock........but I'm a HUGE HH fan!!!!! & I just love it on my CT624 guitar!!!!!!

Then I noticed just how good they look on the ST300 guitar & well........I'm thinking ST300 + HH = X-Mann!!!!! 8) 8) 8)

So I think I'm actually going to change guitar models just to get another Holdsworth Headstock.........

I love this thread too!!!!

Thanks for all the great pictures & the added G.A.S.!!!!!!!

Peace! X-Mann
