My title is Electrical Engineer but I do more software and RF work than anything else. I like it though since my emphasis while studying electrical was controls, communications and computers.

I purchased my first Carvin back in 2002 when I was an aviation technician in the US Navy. My decked out TL60 cost me about 800 dollars I think. I did not think it was too much for a guitar. My second Carvin, my 2009 ST300, was about 1200 dollars, and it too did not seem expensive to me at all, even though I was just finishing my bachelors and getting ready for grad school. My third Carvin, a 1996 DC135 purchased off craigslist, was 350 dollars, and it too was not overpriced. My 2015 Ultra V, still in the oven, was about 1365 dollars. It too is not expensive. I guess for me guitars are a one time thing for me; I do not buy guitars, or anything for that matter, with the mentallity of one day selling it. So while the costs might be a little steep up front for a lot of people, if you keep them, the price is actually pretty good.

I can really relate to this mentality as I too expect to keep and use good gear purchases for many years. My custom LB75A was right at 2k in 2011. That is moderately expensive to me, but not at all overpriced for what I got. I expect to have it for the rest of my days baring any catastrophe. 8)

I sell real estate. I'm not a licensed realtor, but sell owner-financed property working at my father's business. We don't list anything for anyone (which would be illegal without a license anyway) and just sell stuff we buy.

I work in IT as a engineer in cloud systems. I'm able to work remotely now so I don't need to go into the office very much, I work with my guitars just 4 feet away. :)

Really cool stories here. Great community.

I'm a re-recording mixer in NYC, who's done his fair share or sound design as well. In other words I do the final sound mix of programs on TV, etc. I live in Jersey though. I quit Penn State at 19 and went to school for this in NYC at 20. I'm 44 now. I started at one of the most well known music studios around at the time called Power Station. I always wanted to do "Post" Audio (TV/Film) and they had started a TV department at the time, but I got to work with the music guys often too, and got some lucky jobs. I moved to a new Post Studio a couple years later and been 100% in Audio for Video full time ever since.

When I mention this, people often ask... so here is some of what I've worked on.....

As for affording... as I got father into my career and the kids grew up, I've been able to splurge a little over the past few years, and guitars is what I decided to splurge on. I had given up guitar for many years because of the family and living in a condo for the first few years of our marriage, so I'd say that had something to do with it.

Equipment Operator on a Line Crew for the local power company. Pay was good and overtime always there at double time. I could easily have 20hrs OT every pay period if I wanted. Storms could be brutal. We would work 40hrs on, 10 off and 40 on and....until things were cleaned up. The most I ever worked was 135hrs in a 2 week period. Oh and that 40hrs on....we were working not napping. All this made for an easy time picking up gear. Very fortunate. The pic is from 2010, 1st job of a 25hr shift. After 33 1/2 years I retired early this past June 1.

Given the hours worked, I think you probably retired late. Respect!

I setup and repair large presses for a company that makes seat belt anchors and fasteners for the big three auto makers. This job comes with copious amounts of OT (the auto industry is fast paced and very demanding).
It doesn't take me long to save for a Kiesel/Carvin guitar. In fact I'm saving for another one right now.

I am a Clinical Laboratory Scientist. aka Medical Technologist. I work in two different facilities. My specialties are Immunohematology, Hematology, and Microbiology. I used to do a lot of mechanical, auto, electronic, and hydraulic repair. I still do some light machining, welding and auto repair on the side when I'm not working 7 days a week.

I have been a chef owner of a high end restaurant for 11 years. I work in the summer. May thru October and close and take off the rest of the year. I spend the winter enjoying my wife of 20 years and 14 year old son.

Before that I was a road musician. We played all over the mid west at bars, weddings, clubs, ski hills, party's you name it. It was a blast.

Now I cook for a lot of the same type of things. When some one wants a personal chef for a event I go set up and cook.

My wife is my partner and she is great. We work very well together.

I have to echo some of the above my stash of guitars (over 80) has been a constant acquisition over the past 40 years. And the sad part (now I will sound old) I remember buying beautiful quilt top and tiger top Les Paul for $700.00

I have to say this is a cool thread I often wondered what every one else did.

I was an airline pilot. Now I am an Alaskan Malamute Wrangler. Most often, I wrangle these two:

Actually, I am a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist (CAAB) and a Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA). But mostly, I wrangle those two Malamutes.... :?

Meh. It pays and it's pretty easy. Just don't die.

Programmer, process designer/architect, currently focused in the Information Security area and Identity & Access Management for a large transportation company. Previously did mainframe systems programming before InfoSec.

My pay isn't all that great actually, below market, but job stability, benefits and retirement packages make up for it.
