Been considering this for awhile, wonder what everyone thinks

Postby MatiasTolkki » Mon Feb 13, 2017 5:17 pm

So I have 2 amps, a Yamaha THR10 and an H&K Tubemeister 36 with a Carvin 1x12 speaker cab. I can use the Yamaha for direct recording and such, and it takes up very little room and can be played quiet. The TM36 though is a full tube amp, with power soak and DI for recording. My issue is that I dont have a lot of space in my apartment (typical Japanese apartment) and the space being used by the Cab/head is kinda getting in my way.

I've been considering selling the cab and TM36 for awhile, but what does everyone think? Reasonable reason for offing the TM36?
The arsenal:

Carvin/Kiesel:
JB200C the Purple demon of Nagoya
V220C Kabocha (pumpkin)

Kramer:

Amp:

If you have good monitors and the TM36's DI is good, maybe sell the cab... but everyone needs a tube amp in their life, and the TG36 doesn't look that big from photos I can find.

(How can a small head and a 1x12 cab take up that much space?)

I'm biased. I don't like the tm36
I'd sell it unless it was an awesome once in a lifetime deal.
You can always get it again or something else in the future.

If you love it, keep it.
No matter what.
Current Carvins:

JB Numbers Guitar (July sale has given me the itch!)

True -- if you don't like the TM36, you should sell it for that reason... and replace it with a tube amp that you will like.

Oh I like the amp, dont get me wrong. I'm just trying to be logical: Japanese apartments are SMALL (well MINE is :wall: ) and with how much junk I've gathered (and thrown away, which has been a LOT) over the years, it's just not feasible to keep everything right now. That and I rarely use my TM36 because it gets too loud to use in my apartment. I've had complaints before about using it, so that's definitely an issue.

If I was some touring musician and had a band or something, of COURSE I'd keep it. I wouldn't go anywhere without that amp. Problem is, noise levels (I DO keep that thing on 1 watt mode all the time btw, but I can't even drive it hard enough to make it worthwhile) and space. That's why I was wondering what everyone thought.

I can't imagine that getting rid of a lunchbox head and a 1x12 would free up much space? That rig would easily fit under a chair; the head would probably fit under a bed.

Matias,

For a zero space solution, have you tried software such as Amplitube 4 or Bias? I use Amplitube for very low volume practice in the early morning and can get satisfying tones through a pair of monitors. A Fractal would allow for much better sound and true portability to a live environment. That said, I am partial to tube amps in general however there is always the volume consideration...and neighbors  :x :wall:

My bed is set really low (my apartment is a furnished apartment) so can't really fit anything under there. Wish I could though. Well I just need to rearrange this place and see if I can make some space.

If you *really* are running out of room, there's no way that amp can take up as much space as your RGs do...

I know you probably don't want to part with them, but what gets used more? Amp, or four guitars that aren't as good as your ESP or your two Kiesels?

Oh, my Ibanezes DO get played, but they are super rare so I just try not to overdo it with them. That said, you already know my E-II and Kiesels get the most playtime of any of my axes ;)

I think more than anything, a bunch of models I bought way back when are the real space takers in my apartment. I got rid of quite a few but there are still a lot here. I'll have to do some massive spring cleaning when I get some time and see what I can keep and what I will throw away/sell. Keeping the ibanezes though, I'll never find these babies ever again.
