Time Killer Question: What's Your Favorite Headstock Shape

Postby Doctor Turn » Tue Apr 04, 2017 9:33 am

In b4 the headless players post a photo of air/dead space.

But seriously. After taking this photo this past weekend for that LP Special page down in the Other Gear section:

Image

I was starting to think that that crazy Batman/"open-book" headstock on that old HIIN OT might be mine.

It's so large and insane looking, it's a big slab of arctic birch that sort of signals the ballsy sound that will emit from that unique Swedish specimen. When you have it slung on you horizontal and you aim it at someone, it's almost a warning of the huge, unusual, punchy sound to come: bolt-on, humbuckers, Gibson scale, jazzy birch that's almost a SH owing to the huge cavity under the pickguard.

I also love the traditional Carvin headstock, which would be the reserved, dignified inverse of that wild Hagstrom headstock. This Jimmy D'Aquisto designed Swede/Jimmy-Jazzbo headstock also a close runner up:

What's your favorite headstock, can be any brand including vintage or modern Carvin-Kiesel.
Carvin Weaponry:
1985 DC150K (koa) Stereo, M22N/M22SD w/black hardware.
1985 100 Watt X Amp 2 x 12 combo (XV212) upgraded w/ 2 Vintage 30's
...and other gear.

For modern Kiesel, I really like the inline/reverse. For classic, I'm very fond of the Gibson Les Paul with vintage tuning pegs and Telecasters.

My personal favorite however is headless/free space

3x3 pointy is pretty cool, but the all time favorite is the explorer/ hockey stick.

The H33 style is probably my favorite kiesel headstock. Standard or reversed, 6 or 7. Looks good to me for all sorts of builds.
The vader too of course!

Non kiesel - PRS or fender strat would be at the top.
Current Carvins:
2010 Bolt (Candy Red Metallic)
2013 Bolt Plus (Koa)
2016 Black n Blue VSEVEN
2017 TT SCB6

Wish List
Some sort of multiscale 6 HSS with RAD ASH
JB Numbers Guitar (July sale has given me the itch!)

Carvin straight string pull pointy. That's my favorite. sharp looking ( ) and completely functional.
Granted, with a locking nut, it's probably moot. But, it still makes things a little easier, imho.

It kicks this thing arse.

I like the 6-string CT. Compact without being tiny, relatively straight string pull.

Beyond that? Hmm...I didn't really have a connection to any headstock I've owned. Gibson, Fender, Ibanez, Hamer, Kramer, Taylor, Alvarez, Cort, Charvel, Jackson, BC Rich, Yamaha, etc.

Gibson or 3x3 pointy. I've always liked 3x3 headstocks better, but oddly don't like them on double cutaways....

I normally don't like them either, especially if the guitar is a 25.5 HSS Fender or Charvel/Jackson Soloist style axe. But if is clearly something like an SG (or the old Swedish HIIN above), I think the Gib style 3 x 3 works.

What I wanted to ask you is if you feel the same on 3 x 3's on--not counting SG's which are neither superstrat or DC Lester, they are an instrument all their own--double cut Les Pauls.. the DC Specials, Juniors, Standards, etc?

Another 3 x 3 I do like is the Gib 3 x 3 for the Flying V. As well as the Carvin equivalent on the V/V220.

By double cutaways, I meant superstrat-types. 3x3 is still better on SG's and doublecut 'Pauls, etc. At least in my opinion. :)

I like the Holdsworth/Zaza headstock. It's compact, has straight string pull, and I think it looks good.

I guess I'm a fan of 2+4 headstocks.

For Kiesel/Carvin I think the Holdsworth headstock looks the best, and I love both the EB/MM and the Caparison 2+4 headstocks :)

Im not sure why, but I am VERY partial to rounder headstock shapes. It also ticks the straight string pull box. Sure they don't scream METALLLLLL or shout at ya in any fashion and thus boring/dull to most, but they're more like that quiet one who acknowledges you with a simple nod of the head. The old 7 string & 5 bass headstocks have always been my favs

The PTH is my all time favorite.

If not for the Floyd Rose, I would still own this V220

Both Jackson headstocks (aka Carvin '80s pointy/current 3+3 pointy), DC727 (why was this never made into a 6-string version?), Gibson open book, Sully Raven.
