Comparing a JB4 against an SB4000

Postby badlildoggie » Wed Jul 12, 2017 2:02 pm

Hello everyone. 1st off apologies if this is an old topic but i couldnt find it in my search.
What im interested in knowing is the tonal differences between the JB4 and SB4000. are the new pick ups much different? or will they sound very similiar. I love my SB4000, it is an amazing bass and full of sounds. So if anyone has played both or own both, can you tell me your opinion and if you have a preference for 1 over the other, and would owning both be a duplication of each other.

Cheers and many thanks in advance
Kevin

on my sb4000 is the J99's and the JB4 are the new JVA style single coils.

For one thing, you can still order the older J99A pickups (maybe even the original J99) on any bass. I've tried the J99VA a few times but ultimately went back to the J99A. I never tried an SB4000 but the JB4 body is very comfortable to play
Kiesel basses, lots of pedals, nothing wrong

For the most basic description, the JVA pickups seem to have a lot more going on in the mids.
There are a few really good sound demos of JB basses, on YouTube. And in his "part 2" review of the PB5, Trevor James directly compares an SB5000 and a PB5, which has a JVA as the bridge pickup.

The pre-amp/electronics are updated, as well. I would be surprised if the differences are major, however.
