Xcellerator model on it's way out

Postby spudmunkey » Wed Apr 11, 2018 4:04 pm

Based on Jeff's comments in today's live video, "If you've ever wanted an Xcellerator, they are going to be discontinued so get one while you can. You have been warned!"

While it's one of Jeff's own early designs, and he still really likes it, it just hasn't proven itself to be as successful as he had hoped, so it's going to be retired sometime soon.

That's a shame but I'm not surprised to hear that they haven't been selling, I look at YouTube demos and most of them seem to be mine! It's a great bass and I'm glad I got one while they were available.

Maybe it just wasn't different enough? Or maybe people just like the other series better. It's often hard to tell what will sell well and what won't. I've seen other companies discontinue great guitars, because they just didn't catch on.
Guitars: Bolt in Electric Blue, Cobalt 750T

My favorite style.
It's too bad I don't have the need or funds to build one.
Current Carvins:
2010 Bolt (Candy Red Metallic)
2013 Bolt Plus (Koa)
2016 Black n Blue VSEVEN
2017 TT SCB6

Wish List
Some sort of multiscale 6 HSS with RAD ASH
JB Numbers Guitar (July sale has given me the itch!)

Sorry to hear this, but not really surprised.
Every time I pick up my X54 fretless, I'm absolutely blown away by how well it plays.
Really a fantastic instrument that has singlehandedly stopped my GAS for Fretless 5ers.

Get 'em while you can!

On the video, Jeff said something about people finding it too ... pointy? I forget exactly how he put it. It seems to me that the body is pretty straightforward. I wonder if more headstock options would have helped sales. Ah well!

I've never had the chance to handle one, but they always looked a little awkward to me. It looks like an LB that has a bit of body modification. I can't remember the last time I saw one of the daily FB walkthrough. On a side note, I've noticed that basses on the bottom of the page always seem to be the next one of the chopping block.

A really nice purple quilt X44 showed up on the FB feed about a week ago:

The builds I have seen over the last year or so have been really nice. It's a really comfortable bass, but I can see why players would overlook it for another model. That upper rabbit ear takes some getting used to. Hate to see it go, just the same.

For it, it seemed "off" from the get go, how the upper horn got visually narrower and then wider again. One someone pointed out the Bugs Bunny ear, I couldn't un-see it.

There were a lot of great-looking bases, though. When it was released, I was pleased to see a bass with a BBE sort of body edge. I'm surprised it didn't prove to be all that popular.

Were any options limited on it that you could get readily on other models?

I can't think of an options specific to the X that you couldn't get on something else. For me, it was a combination of options and aesthetics - I just think it looks super cool. :)

FWIW, I think the Icon looks great with a pointy headstock.

Sounds like you need to bump it up a few places... Or get another job. :-p if my recent experience is anything to go by, ripping people off on Craigslist must be worthwhile. Someone tried ripping me off on $2k in just one transaction.
