Question... 1982 DC200 switching

Postby eyeslikefire » Wed Dec 27, 2017 9:59 am

Hello guys... Just joined the forum.
Actually been around since the inception of the museum and it's BBS.
Anyway my question is this, I just acquired a 1982 DC200 Koa for Christmas. I used to own an 81.
The phase switch of my 81 was just a simple on and off. However the phase switch on this 82 is a 3 position! I was able to determine that it swaps the coils on the neck p/u. When I switch to the bridge the middle position on the switch mutes the output.

Is this normal, or is something funny happening? Does anyone here know how this three way phase switch is supposed to work.

Thanks folks! I really appreciate it!

Not normal.
Sounds like someone made a modification or two. :)

Thank you... Do you know if it came with a 3 position phase switch this year? Or do you think it was added...

Modified. I have an 85 150, which the 200 switching is based on. The phase switch is always just in/out, via up/down, and activated when the 3 way is in the middle position with both pickups on.

And this is true regardless where the coil splits are, HH, SH, HS, or SS. In or out of phase regardless of coil disposition.

Mini switches from that era were all 2 position. Coil split as well as polarity/phase. So it's definitely been modified somewhere along the ownership chain.

And eh.. *ahem*

Whaddaya think.. ? you can just STROLL right on in here, proclaim yourself an owner of a vintage Mark Kiesel solid old growth koa masterwork... the kind of guitar that shall never be again... and just STROLL RIGHT OUT without providing pictures????

I know what I say:

You never got the guitar. You're making the whole thing up. Pics or it never ever happened.

Let's see that bad boy!

Absolutely! The least I can do...
Now with the picture you get the whole story. My 81 was stolen from a church of all places, the guitar meant a great deal since it was my first "real" guitar and one that my father helped me get. This happened in 2003 and ever since then I haven't stopped looking in local pawn shops, on ebay and reverb. This one came up on the bay in November and I mentioned it to my wife... Well her and my kids ended up surprising me with it on Christmas! Well here it is... This weekend I'm taking it back to stock. Oh and sorry for the ugly ass creepy toe.

That's awesome! I think I remember seeing that one listed, and drooling over it. Those things are like LP Customs hidden inside of a strat shaped body. Awesome guitar, and the mini switch re-set shouldn't be that big of a deal. I think you can get em at Stewmac for under ten bucks apiece. I believe they're just On/On. Double throw.
