Bolt Mini Switch - How does it work?

Postby Tony PD » Mon Jun 15, 2009 3:59 pm

The catalog says the Bolt mini switch, along with the slider switch, allows all seven pickup combinations. But how does it work? I assume the slider switch covers: bridge, bridge + middle, middle, middle + neck, neck. That leaves bridge + neck and bridge + middle + neck. So how do you get those two with the mini switch?

Also for HSS configuration with coil splitter, is the coil splitter incorporated into the existing mini switch, or is a second mini switch added.

I looked at the HSS Bolts in the guitar gallery. That was no help. Most had one mini switch, but one of them had three switches (?).

With an SSS guitar the mini is an "always-on" switch for the bridge pup. So if it's on and you use the 5 way to select neck only or neck + middle, the bridge is added to the mix.

On HSS Bolts that same switch is just a coil splitter.

OK. So for an SSS Bolt, it's basically an on/off switch for the bridge pickup. Makes sense. But for an HSS Bolt, is the mini-switch an on/off switch or a 3-way switch? I would think it would have to be a 3-way (off/single/hum). A 2-way coil splitter (single/hum) would mean the bridge pickup is always on. Correct?

No. On an HSS, it's not a pick-up selector at all. It's merely a coil splitter, for when you've moved the 5-way to a position where it would use the HB.

An HSS Bolt can be ordered with two mini-toggles, one for add-bridge-PU and the other to split the HB.
