NBD-B50F w/Spalted Maple Top

Postby Catman10 » Sat Mar 16, 2013 8:41 pm

Greetings! This is the one that everyone has been "cowbwelling" about. It seems that this one made it to Carvin's Facebook page during the build process. The pic was generously shared by "RockCrue" on the "Carvin Clubs" forum section.

I happened to acknowledge it was mine, but I wasn't ready or able to post pics of my new "baby" just yet. This of course has drawn a torrent of cowbelling, which I have really enjoyed seeing all the usual favs...and even some new ones! Thanks to everyone that did, and all that even just thought about it.

Before I get to the long-awaited pics, I'd like to give the background on it and the specs of this bass. The overall idea behind this bass was the fact that not too many B50s get speced out with any type of exotic type tops, so I thought I would get my favorite top (spalted maple) on it to dress her up. I have never owned a bass with koa, so I decided to choose koa as my body wood and have two strips of it in the neck. Since I already have an SB5000F w/ J99A pickups I decided to get the J99/HB combo for pickups. I normally get the standard knobs for the preamp (V/V/T/t/b), so I decided to try something different by going with the mid-sweep option replacing the passive tone control.
A tiny tidbit of trivia for this build is I originally was trying to get a spalted maple HAN-coated fretboard for this one. I thought it would look so cool to have an entire continuous wood grain pattern that would run from the headstock to the end of the body with an unmarked fingerboard. The guitar people at Carvin gave it a "thumbs up", which then passed it along to the "wood guys". My salesman said that if the wood guys could find a piece of spalted maple long enough to do a fingerboard that it was a good chance that they would do it. Unfortunately, the wood guys said spalted maple had too much of an inconsistent hardness for it to be used as a fingerboard. Oh well, I tried.
Here are the specs on this beauty I call Not-So-Plain "Jane":
B50F
Spalted maple top w/ matching SB headstock.
Cream TRC (I think it looked too out of place, so I changed it out with a black one)
TUSQ ivory nut
HAN-coated ebony fingerboard
Five-piece maple neck w/ 2 koa strips
Koa body (the body has such a sweet subtle flame to it that it could be used as a top)
Black hardware
Rosewood knobs
Mid-sweep option replacing the passive tone knob
J99A/HB pickups with a coil split switch for the HB

She has a little "beauty spot" on the upper edge of the headstock where the koa shows. Some would send it back for this, but I think it just adds character.

Well first off, that's just quite simply a wonderful looking bass. Really.

A spalted board? SICK IDEA. Wow.

As it is, that bass is beautiful. I love the koa body. Nice choice. Spalt is very inconsistent. I find yours very nice. I'm afraid to order spalt -- I'm too picky about it.

HAN? SWEET! Ok, so you gotta drop pics of this into the HAN club. I'm very curious about the neck pickup. That's a newer J99A, yes? I wonder if you'll have hum from it. Let us know. I LOVE the HB at the bridge. Ok, overall I love all your electronics choices, including the mid sweep (very potent). I would think a youtube clip would be great. A HAN with those pickups? Heck yeah - a youtube clip and full tone report.

Lastly, no lines/no dots. PERFECT!

GREAT BASS. CONGRATS!!!!!!

Slick A$$ bass dude an great pics 8) :applause:

And just to clarify on the cowbell concept >>

TO cowbell: toot the horn (rattle the cowbell so to speak) about a build and not showing pictures, is to be the guilty offending party. (i'e. you were the cowbelling party) :o

Cowbell alerts, Calling Cowbell etc.: the sworn duty of the rest of the Carvin BBS, to shame all those who step in the cow-patty and come to the party without pics. [U] 8)

You gotta wonder if the guy named Cowbell ever posted pictures of his instrument?

Really nice bass - lovely top AND back.

Fretless too!

Thanks for all the kind words, guys! I played it out yesterday, and she sounded great! First impressions about this one is that this one has a very sweet and smooth midrange. Of course plenty of growl from it with the HAN and the HB in the bridge position. I find myself plucking over the HB because that's where it seems to sound best, due to the beautiful mids it has. There was no hum from the J99A in the neck position, and the mid-sweep control gives you complete control over the tone. I would liken the difference between the standard controls w/ the passive tone control and the mid-sweep with digital cameras. The passive tone control is like a point-and-shoot because its more like a preset tone knob that can get great results by just turning a single knob. The mid-sweep is more like a professional SLR camera because you have infinite control over all the settings. I found myself keeping the levels for the treble, bass, and mid constant and changing the frequency of the mid boost to suit whichever combination of pickup volumes I happened to be using.

I will make sure I post pics of it in the proper forums! I'm going to have to wait till the weekend to attempt a video demo of it.
