HH2 MOD - F Hole and Pickguard!

Postby vlnbow » Fri Mar 28, 2014 12:02 pm

Here is my take on the Tele thinline theme for the HH2.

With my pickguard design I utilized 3 of the 4 screw holes from the neck pickup bezel. In theory, this along with some double-sided mounting tape would be all that is needed to secure the pick up and pickguard while providing for a non permanent, reversible mod. For an HH1, deleting the pick up route and just double-sided mounting tape is all that would be required.

But since I am going full bore and adding the F-Hole, I decided to opt for a full set of mounting screws as seen in the first picture.

The f-hole design was taken from the Carvin design to maintain continuity - but scaled down for the smaller HH body.

Another bonus with this Mod - I can make subsequent pickguards and change the pickup route to a tele single coil, a strat single coil, a P90 or just an after market Humbucker with 2 mounting screws instead of 3 and have “endlessâ€

I love it! Definitely digging the f-hole. (How do you know that space behind it is hollow?)
How about a chrome pickup ring for the bridge pup. I think it would give the impression of the 'ash tray' bridge, if you like that look.

The "rim" around the outer edges are about 7/8" and my f-hole will be 1' in from the edge.

He sent me a pic of a bare body with the routes, so I was able to put everything in its pre-drilled holes, and the f-hole over the chamber. :)

I understand your reason for the pickguard, for pickup versatillity but just my opinion, I think it would look great with the F hole but leave off the pickguard!

I agree - that too would look good... but my vision for this one is the tele dlx thinline kind of thing...
I may hold off on doing all the screw holes..so I can post pics with the fhole with and without the pickguard.

Oh man, I love that! I normally don't care for the F-hole on a tele look-- but I think it looks awesome on your photoshop. I really, really dig the pick guard shape on this too.

I once said that I'd love to see Carvin offer a HH3 with 3 single coils like a strat-- though they could do 2 like a tele-- since on a 24 fret guitar there's not a ton of space between the fretboard and bridge to do 3 angled pickups, perhaps. Anyway, I'd love to see them do a version with single coils and a pick guard-- and yours is a nice step in that direction, visually.

Can't wait to see what it looks like after you get it done. Good luck!

IMO, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

If I want any other pick-ups (SC or P-90's) I'd simply switch to a set of Duncan P-Rails.

I hear ya... But it is not about "being broke" or "fixing it".

It is about being "Custom", which I believe to be a part of what lead everyone here to buy Carvin in the first place. Mine is just a little more custom now.. :D

P-rails?? I haven't heard of them before and did a quick read of the specs..sounds like a cool idea.

But I love the H22's and rarely (never?!) use the bridge pick up so changing it would be silly. I was just postulating different ideas in my description.

So you are going to carve an actual f hole in your hh2? Yikes. Have you thought about the poly finish on the guitar or will it be a tung oil finish? The finish will likely crack/split around the f hole and will need to be refinished.

Its a cool look though Ill give you that. Id like to see a traditional tele shaped puck guard and the chrome plate for the controls. I think that would be cool.

I will not "carve" it, I will be routing it. The finish takes routing/ drilling fine - it is not as "brittle" as you would think. I will paint the edges of the f-hole black as traditionally done on violins.

As for the pickguard, I designed it to be a fitting representation, like those of the Tele thinline and Dlx models but not a direct copy and not crowd the F hole. To use a true tele style pickguard design would obfuscate the logo.... a "no-no" for me.

Not sure about the pickguard, but I really dig the f-hole! :applause:

Consider a non-traditional soundhole shape. :)

I have seen that...nice job.

But personally, I do not think those are the most elegant inlays that Carvin could use for a "signature" design. Besides the fact, I am a violin maker. I like f-holes.

PD - what about a single-coil rendition of the HH2? S60 in the bridge and AP11 in the neck? It would really be cool with the F-hole, and if you like pickguards, go for it!
