PB5 two-fer, "Sadie" and "Heather"

Postby Catman10 » Sat Dec 28, 2013 10:22 pm

I received these two basses so close to each other that I thought I would post pics for both in the same thread.

First off, meet Sadie:

I had seen this bass in the GIS section when I was waiting for my custom shop PB5 order, and when I received my customer appreciation coupon I just had to snatch this one up, and I'm so glad I did. Its about as standard as standard can get on a PB5. Its the first Carvin bass I've ever had that has the tung oil finish, and I can see why so many players really love it! This bass has such a nice open tone, and its what I used to record the bass line on X-Mann's latest creation entitled "NAMM Jam". I didn't realize it at the time I purchased it, but once she arrived I noticed something very familiar with her. After comparing her with the pictures on the web site I realized that this bass was one of the first production PB5s Carvin made. This bass was originally made with a black pickguard, and is the bass you see when you click to enter the PB5 web page. Its also the bass thats in 3 of the 4 small thumbnails photos under the main photo on the main page. It is not only the first bass in the PB5 gallery page, but is also the bass you see on the first page of the PB5 "builder". So basically, this is the most photographed and viewed PB5 ever, which I think is really cool!

Meet "Heather":

The specs for "Heather" are "hog" body painted vintage yellow metallic with a satin matte finish, 5-piece neck with two "hog" strips, flamed maple fretboard, SS frets, J99VA in the bridge, active electronics. This bass has a more refined and complex palette of tones available. Its generally rather warm with a nice amount of attack without being overbearing or harsh. This bass is so beautiful that after removing it from the case I didn't play it right away, but just set it on a stand to stare at it saying "wow" to myself. I used this bass to play the little solo break in X-Mann's "NAMM Jam". This bass is very special to me, but not just because its so good looking.

Wowie! Great looking pair!

Had you played the PB before, or was your two-fer a leap of faith?

Thank you, "spudmonkey". It was a leap of faith, absolutely. But I have been playing Carvin basses for almost 4 years now, so I had faith I'd be getting something worthwhile, and I certainly did…X2!!!

Amazing and congrats, big time.

You know, an A/B comparison youtube clip would be fantastic, especially with some active/passive comparisons thrown in.

Capitol idea there, gnp! I've been threatening to come up with a video for some time now, but haven't gotten around to it. I think this is as good a reason as any to get off my tuckus and actually try it. I'll post it if it turns out decently.

Reminds me of the cell phone commercials with the little kids around the table. "Whats better...one beautiful Carvin bass or two beautiful Carvin basses?" All the kids reply..."Two!" Congrats on two amazing ladies!

That's very cool, thank you! You guys did do a great job on her. I'm definitely keeping an extra copy of that catalog! If she makes the cover I'll be passing out cigars!

Cool story and :coolpics:

Would love to hear it Catman, from you and all the other forum bassists! We need more bass material going on here imo. As a guy who has the ultimate respect for that instrument and has never learned to play it, I'd love to hear whatever you guys come up with!

LOL! Thank you, SD! I didn't plan on getting two originally. I was happily awaiting the completion of "Heather" when I happened to see "Sadie" sitting in the GIS. Then the coupon was sent about a week before Thanksgiving making a sweet deal even sweeter. I wasn't sure if Carvin was going to have any "Black Friday" deals that would apply to "Sadie" (turns out they did), but I didn't want this one to be the "one that got away". I'm so happy I didn't wait for the sale, even if it meant missing out on saving $59.

Wow! Between Sadie's web appearances and Heather's upcoming catalogue debut that's a lot of celebrities in one family! I'll call the Baldwins and see if they can recommend an agent.

Enjoy those new beauties, and +1 on an active/passive comparo!

I would love to hear a tone comparison since one has rosewood and the other maple fretboard.

Thanks, everyone, for the kind words! When I was contemplating the build I was going through the usual thought process as to what color, finish, woods, etc… Basically going through the basses I do have and thinking what option don't I have in a Carvin yet, and also what have I never had on a bass. With "Sadie" its the tung oil finish and passive electronics. With "Heather" its the VYM paint, flamed maple fretboard, and mahogany body w/ two strips in the neck. I actually got the idea for "Heather's" color scheme from the example Carvin has for VYM in the "Woods and Color Guide".
