NGD - HF2S Fatboy synth!

Postby brento73 » Sun Dec 06, 2015 5:41 am

After about a year decided what I wanted and another agonizing seven weeks awaiting it's arrival, my new guitar is here!

I also shot an 'unboxing' video for the first time. Well, my wife shot it, I was just the guy unboxing. :)

See that here: HERE

I also did a little playing on those Elixers and put it up on Soundcloud. It's not much, but it's a start. There's not effects or processing of any sort, it's all through the 'natural clean' setting on my Boss GP-10.

Pics(and above video) courtesy of my phone. I'll try to get some better pics up soon!

Congrats brento! Phone video did the trick - your enthusiasm came through fine.

:applause: :applause: :applause: :applause: :applause:

Is it light weight? It looks smaller in your video than I picture it. I'm looking forward to your impressions.

Awesome man, congratulations. I like your reaction when you pull it out of the box. Looks and sounds great. Lots of tonal variety!

Very nice. Quite a difference between that and your old SH, except for the logo.. Glad you finally got a keeper that will get a wide variety of tones. I think I saw your inspiration walking around in the shot (fat cat). Enjoy and HNGD!

Thanks, all!

Coda: according to my not-super-precise bathroom scale(weighing myself with and without the guitar) it weighs about the same as my Indonesian Squire Strat you see hanging in the background, which is around 7 1/2 pounds.

dach: yes, 'fatboy' version 1 is running around in the background. He's also black, but not 100% black, so he was an inspiration for this guitar.

Having the chance to play it more, I will say it feels more acoustic than the SH275 when I'm just playing unplugged. Plugged in I feel like they sound similar, with this having a little bit more hollow sound to it. It still rocks the F&#$ out when I switch to one of my 'heavy' patches on the GP-10.

This is my first ever covered pickup experience(other than noodling around in guitar shops) and I have to say I'm really liking them so far.

I'll get some samples up soon with the new strings(D'Addario Chromes 12-52).

This video just reminds me of how great NGD is! :applause: :applause: :applause:

And, just a quick note (I'm a video guy during the day). If you (or your wife) is shooting video on your cell phone, the recommended way is to shoot sideways so that you maximize the aspect ratio of typical widescreens now. Small item, but worth knowing.

Yeah, I thought about saying something to her, but I was too eager to open that box :)

Added a similar sound test with the new strings:LINK

Ok, I listened to the soundcloud upload.

Let's start with this - I do not play guitar and never have. I'm an actual (just) bass player. But, I've spent decades around guitar/ists, been in bands, etc. My 2 cents:

*every sound was useable
*every sound was enjoyable to my ears
*i dig the metal covers; i can definitely hear the difference
*splits are amazing; sometimes splits are thin or weird or not so useable

Can't wait to hear the flats you say you wanna try!

Gumby, there's a link to the flats a few posts back. You can also just go to my soundcloud page and see both the elixers and the flats:

man, the flats are so different.

it's horrible that it would make me want two of the exact-same guitar -- one with flats and one with rounds (like with bass).

great tones, and thanks.

We once went to a higher-end steak house for a treat. We walk in and there's a two-piece jazz setup: guitarist and piano. Very tasty (no pun intended). They were amazing players. After the meal, before dessert, my youngest approaches the guitar guy on a break. You could tell he liked having someone notice. Youngest comes back and says the guitarist plays flats through a bass amp. He said he's done that for many years - gives him the presence he wants, and timbre. What a lesson.

Nice! One of the things about bass amps is that they often have a wider frequency response than guitar amps, which are made to sound guitar-y. I currently play through either my little M-Audio AV40 studio monitors or a Laney LA35C acoustic guitar amp. At some point I'd like to get a nice, neutral sounding PA setup.

I found that to be the case as well. Whenever my high school band played anywhere, before and after our set, we would play music from a discman...and it sounded better through the bass amp than our crappy PA. For a couple of months, I played my acoustic through a Carvin BX500...it sounded great through my friend's bass cabs (not as good through my guitar speakers). I have my AG100D now, and it's great, and many folks have great success with playing a bass through it. When I was searching for an acoustic amp that could also handle bass, most everyone I talked to suggested keyboard amps...which are often, essentially, PA combos.

It finally came! Congrats Brent--enjoy that baby girl, I'm sure she will make nice noise when you stroke her. You look like a kid at Xmas with the unopened box before you, trying to suppress the smile... :applause:
