Try a set of flats some time. Amazing difference.

Re: Kiesel Random Thoughts (not worth their own thread)Guess he isn't motivated enough to sell. He posted it for $600 OBO, i offered $500 twice. No responses from either. Still listed for $600 obo.
In the meantine, a 6-string neck through (don't remember if Icon or LB) with defective electronics was posted for $250 (if I remember right) but that sold pretty quick. Oh, well. My $170 Ibanez is suiting me well enough... especially since all but one guitar is going into storage for a few months (construction on the house addition and new roof has (finally) started. Din't want to risk anything getting damaged.

It gets better, man. Prior to getting a new place, half my music equipment spent 2 years in storage. It's been like getting a bunch of stuff I forgot about back. We are entitled to our own, wrong, opinions.

Re: Kiesel Random Thoughts (not worth their own thread)Yeah, we're going from 760sqft 2bd/1ba, and adding in to the back so it's 1030sqft and 3br/2ba....plus and entire re-roof, adding skylights to the living room, and a small roof deck over the new addition. So I can't really complain.

You know, here in flyover country, you can get 2000 sqdt and 3 or 4 baths for likely half of what you west coast folks pay ![]() You could have an entire floor of your house dedicated to guitars, and still have more space than now! ![]() 2017 SH6 - Piezo/S22s
Re: Kiesel Random Thoughts (not worth their own thread)I grew up in rural Wisconsin. We paid more for this 750 sqft house on a 25'x100' lot than my parent's did for their 2200 sqft ranch with a full basement and 10 acres. Ha!
Re: Kiesel Random Thoughts (not worth their own thread)I used to have a real estate license in NYC and practiced it for a couple years.
One of the first things they teach you in classes for the test is "Never put square footage on rental apartments in Manhattan." Why? Because someone sitting in the midwest or even on the west coast, that's looking to move, will read that a $2800 one bedroom apartment in a decent area of the upper east side or Chelsea is only 500 square feet, and will never look further and set an appointment. 500 Sq Ft. is actually not bad at that price in those neighborhoods, especially within a 5 -6 block walk to the subway... but without the perspective of being here in NYC, immersed in the madness of the reality of these crazy prices, the person reading your ad from afar will think "$2800 for 500 lousy square feet? I have a 3,000 square foot home with a backyard a front yard and my mortgage here in _________ is only 900 a month!" and they'll never call or email, thinking it's a ripoff. You have to let them get to the city, arrive, see the reality, and see the proof that your listing is actually normal and possibly even a steal. But NYC has become completely ridiculous. Never mind music, it's the price of living and doing your daily thing that I pity the millenials most about. They've been handed a shart show. Carvin Weaponry:

Re: Kiesel Random Thoughts (not worth their own thread)SF is similar. My parents and I still send each other the occasional real estate listing from the San Francisco are and rural-ish Wisconsin (I say rural-ish because they sold than 10-acre property and they have since moved to "the city" of 30,000 people) because they are both hilarious. Here: 1BR condo: $3m. There: 4br, 3ba house on 2 acres: $220k.
![]() Walking down the sidewalk one day, I heard 3 people trying to rationalize $2K for a studio, because it wouldn't be that bad if all three of them lived there, and split it 3 ways. They all worked for a tech way-beyond-start-up.
Re: Kiesel Random Thoughts (not worth their own thread)About ten years ago, where the present day madness in NYC was already well underway (we went from initial post-9/11 doldrums where NOTHING HAPPENED, to a total explosion and everybody wants to live here again like the early 20th century) I swear I saw a segment on 60 minutes or maybe even a local news show here.. and there was people renting out A TRANSOM ABOVE A DOORWAY. They slung a little mattress/bunk up under the ceiling, and made the transom a little window, and put little drawers running down the side of the bunk up there...... and--wait for it--asking one thousand for it, the line was running out the front door and down the walk up steps to the apartment in the tenement.

Re: Kiesel Random Thoughts (not worth their own thread)Just gotta rant... figured I'd put it here to avoid creating an entire thread about it, especially since I know there are threads out there already....
Anyway! Does string gauge effect guitar tone? I've run across a few videos lately, and discussions below them, concerning this topic. The argument for those who say it doesn't generally goes something like: So-and-so used 8s on such-and-such, and they had HUGE TONE!!!!! as if tone is a measurement, and you can have MORE or LESS. Ok, but so-and-so sounds GOOD with 8s, so THERE! ![]() But, again.... once could argue that single coils sound GOOD, and humbuckers sound GOOD.... but do they sound the SAME? No, obviously not. My wife can hear the difference, and she know jack about guitars. There's this idea, this FEAR, perhaps, the 'effects tone' means 'makes BETTER!!!'. When I say string gauge(and material, and winding, and... etc.) effects tone, it's not about better or worse. It just means it sounds DIFFERENT. If anyone has read this far and doubts that string gauge effects tone, try this: If you have 10s, as many do, this will be about perfect. Tune your high E down a step to D. Next, tune your B up to D(this is my high string: a 13 tuned to D). Compare how they sound. Different? I don't know that one will sound better, but I can pretty much guarantee they won't sound the same. I mean... if scale length effects tone(and I feel like most people are on board with that) then there is LITERALLY NO WAY gauge won't also effect it, in a pretty similar way.
Re: Kiesel Random Thoughts (not worth their own thread)
Gauge effects tone due to mass in motion (inertial energy). The more mass, the more energy it can have in motion. The larger the string gauge (given the same scale length) the more tension, as well, which effects how the string vibrates, and the overtones/harmonics created. Keep in mind that the amount of mass also means the amount of magnetic mass (which is reactive to the pickup's magnet field) changes, albeit slightly. The differences between string material are audible, but subtle. Try a set of gut strings on an electric, and no sound is output (non magnetically-permeable string). Try it with nickel-wrapped, vs nickle-plated steel, vs. stainless steel, vs. the cobalt steel strings, and each one is different. Then factor in the coated strings (which will dampen vibrations slightly), or even flat-wounds. Random side-note: flatwounds are excellent for shredding. They self-damp pretty well, and the wound strings are extremely quiet, with little extra string-ringing. They carry some extra tension on the wound strings, but it's not terrible if one's already turning lower. Some sets come with a plain 3rd string. They are also extremely robust strings in general, and don't break easily, as well as being pretty high output (stainless steel wrap will help with that). The EQing is a bit different on them; they need lots of treble, but for a fizzy amp, they'll have a rather smooth sound. Turn the bass down and season mids to taste. Some amps may not work well with them (such as a Legacy, or possibly a Bogner). Just some thoughts this morning. We are entitled to our own, wrong, opinions.

Re: Kiesel Random Thoughts (not worth their own thread)I second the flatwounds. I play D'Addario Chromes, 13-56, wound G string. They sound great to me, and last pretty much forever. I have Chromes on my old Yamaha bass, too, and I expect they will last longer than the bass.
Re: Kiesel Random Thoughts (not worth their own thread)
I have thomasink infields on my sh645. They sound great on both. I am about to post some pictures on the other gear page in a few minutes and you can see the amps. Along with the toastmaster 3000 ![]() ![]()
Re: Kiesel Random Thoughts (not worth their own thread)Despite the physics of it . . .
Back when I first started playing, you know, since Billy Gibbons went to 9s and all, I thought what the hell? They don't hurt as bad. Hated 'em. My ear is my only real talent and I can certainly tell. Now the dirtier and squeallier it gets, the less I can tell. But I play 10s on my hardbodies and 11s on my semi-hollows. It matters . . .
