I decided to inventory all the pickups I have, just sitting around. Here's the Carvin-only part of that list. All told, I apparently have 15 of their pickups as spares. I think I'm good. :D

Count Model Color Mount Type
2 AP11 White Bezel
1 AP11R Black Bezel
2 M22V Black Bezel
2 M22SD Black Bezel
4 AP11 Black Bezel
1 TBH60 Black Bezel
1 M22SD White Direct
1 M22V White Direct
1 M22T Black Bezel

I see a distinct lack of C22 in there. :stir: :laughhard:

Yeah, there's a reason for that. While I don't mind the C22N or T, I don't seek them out.

The B/J isn't my thing at all. Never cared for either pickup.

S60 variants are also absent.

You need a spare vintage N!
Carvin Weaponry:
1985 DC150K (koa) Stereo, M22N/M22SD w/black hardware.
1985 100 Watt X Amp 2 x 12 combo (XV212) upgraded w/ 2 Vintage 30's
...and other gear.

Heh.. they'll have to pry my spare vintage M's (still in the box from eBay, eighties N/SD) from my hands in full rigor mortis! :laughhard:

There's a seller on eBay who seems to feel similarly, as they have a used M22SD and T set of pickups, selling individually, priced higher than what can be had new. They also list a set of H22 pickups as from the 80s.

I always look for them, but people seem to be trying to cash in on the "vintage" Carvin thing. Prices are just weird, and people are wanting some crazy (to me) prices for things. Makes me almost want to try selling my used stuff, make 3-4 times the money I paid for it, and go buy a new one, just to do it.

So either I am missing something obvious, they have a time machine and got the pickups from the 80s which is at least 7 years before the launch of the H1 and H2 guitars which came with the H22 pickups, or they are mistaken.

I decided to contact the seller and confirm if they're 80s, as well as sending them a link to the museum catalog page showing their first year. The seller responded that it was an autocorrect problem from their phone.

Uh huh, because any phone will totally correct 90s to 80s.....

They updated the ad to say 90s, however, they want $175 for the pair.

I'm not as concerned with the vanishing of the H22s as I am with some of the others.
The newer Kiesel Holdsworths are just so good-sounding.

I find the Lithium single coils to be very nice pickups, but I still like the AP11s a whole lot more.

My Google-Fu is failing me...

For some reason I just can't seem to find any photos of that carved top model that was inspired by a print ad for the same model, where the top and fret board were made up of several pieced together woods. I can find images of the print ad, but I haven't found a single photo of the physical top guitar that was built later.

So I just cleaned and oiled the neck and fretboard on my CL6 for the first time and realized that it probably has the nicest piece of ebony I've ever seen on a guitar. Really nice grain with some waviness and depth but still really dark. I'll snap some pictures tomorrow when it's light out.

I'd rock that. So hard. It's a cool concept, and the work required to make it a reality would be tough, too.

Does anyone know where it went? Private collection, maybe?

We don't know that they actually broke up different maple veneers to create the illusion of the different figured tops working against each other, do we? I think this was actually discussed already but I just wanted to be sure. My guess is it's a silkscreen layover based on a very hi rez printout on some kind of vinyl or plastic.. to simulate the top.

Hmm… I don't remember hearing anything about it being anything but cut up wood top scraps, and painted "tear" lines over any filled gaps (how I would have done it, I guess)...… but I've been mistaken once or twice before. hah!

I do remember them saying that Albert hand painted the white on the pick up bobbins and rings, but that's the only detail that I definitely remember.

I know it hung in the showroom for a long time, but I don't recall ever seeing it in showroom photos since they moved to the new factory. Perhaps it's in that back room that Jeff has shown off in some of his life walkthrough videos where he keeps some of their vintage instruments, or perhaps it's at mark's home. If I remember right, it's very sentimental to him, and I remember hearing someone from a Carvin saying that it would never be sold.

Too engrossed with wondering whether they could, the luthiers neglected to consider whether they should.

Jokes aside, it's honestly a really great showcase piece, especially if they were using scrap wood and whatnot for it. Wonder how it sounds with all the glue and bits and bobs.
