Interested in an M22SD, But.....

Postby PowerTube » Fri Jan 11, 2019 5:47 pm

I have an important (to me) question for those who have the M22SD: does it also distort when playing clean tones? I like a bell-like clarity when playing BOTH clean and dirty. I hate a sludgy, slurry sound and I like definition between notes. The C22B gives me that great definition.

So would an M22SD sound like a C22B except hotter, or will everything be distorted or fizzy?

IME, the M22SD will fully distort clean channels that stay very clean on a neck M22V.

That's what I was afraid of. I need clarity, even with extreme distortion. That's what I have now but wanting to experiment with a bit more "oomph."

Maybe I should instead look at the M22T-1. It has basically the same output but it's not described as a "distortion" pickup.

To clarify (heh), the M22SD stays really clear under a lot of distortion. It's just that it has so much output that "clean" isn't really on the menu, unless you split it.

I had some trouble with the Lithiums distorting too much on cleans, and setting them pretty low helped tame the output and gave me a bit better note separation. YMMV, but the SD is definitely very clear under gain, it's just also hot.

The non clean abilities of the SD are hugely exaggerated. It cleans up just fine.

Yeah, 14k isn't a crazy hot wind. It's in the Duncan JB range of output/clarity trade-off.

That's almost verbatim what I was going to write next. I was going to mention that 13.9k isn't all that big a deal. There are more legit modern high output waffle iron pickups that have a single purpose.. to scream their heads off and nothing else.

The SD is a mildly hotter, thumpy PAF type. You can clean it up just fine and straddle both worlds nicely.

I have two guitars with M22SDs and they're fine for clean passages in otherwise distorted songs. I do often switch to the neck for a fully clean sound though.

To put in perspective. I can use the bridge pickup (with the volume rolled down a bit) for the break in Rocket Queen. But I'll use the neck for Beth.

My experience is the SD dirties up a sparkling clean channel. It takes more work to clean it up. Try the T, turn up the gain knob on the dirt channel (its not that necessary tho).

Into what guitar are we thinking about putting this M22SD?

In my DC135 I've had the H22t, the C22B, and currently the M22SD. The M22SD is working out just fine for me. 8)

But I wouldn't use one in a guitar with a preamp like my AE185.

This one:

It's a DC600 from 2015. Standard maple neck and alder body. It has the C22B in the bridge and I REALLY like it. But like I'm prone to do, I can't help wondering if I might like the SD a little better. I know that their ohms ratings are less than one ohm apart.

I've read that the M22SD has a bit more bass than the C22B. Can any of you verify or refute this?

Let's not forget the "BBB," the bat below the bridge.
