Is this some kind of freaky Ash treatment? I've been waffling finishing my Ash tele kit guitar cuz I can't decide on the finish. That is quite unique whatever it is?

Flat-sawn (I think is what they said) zebrawood.

Yep, flat-sawn zebrawood. Which makes me wonder what cut pattern they're using on the wood normally.

I get a little confused between quarter-sawn and rift-sawn because we always talk about quarter-sawn in regards to the pieces in the middle of the quarter cut, where the grain is going straight up and down. But really we would want those rift-sawn pieces if they cut the lumber in the radial pattern, because then they're all going to have the most vertical grain pattern The quarter sawn 45 degree angle cuts, you end up with a slanted grain on the pieces at the edges of the quarters.

It definitely gets inexplicably tricky.

The sawyer/miller calls the process specific names. Quarter-sawing involves cutting the log into, you guessed it, quarters. When you're cutting it so that every cut intersects the center, that process is "rift sawing". But perplexingly, lumber sellers use similar terms for seemingly different grain patterns.

Rift cutting gives you all quarter-sawn lumber, while quarter-sawing gives you a mix of quarter-sawn and rift-sawn lumber.

My guess is that the wood Kiesel uses is milled using the "quarter" process, because it's a much more efficient process, both in terms of effort/time as well as yield. As a result of the quarter-cut process, you'd end up with both "rift sawn" and "quarter sawn" lumber. When you're close to intersecting the center/pith of the tree, you're getting the straighter, more "perpendicular" ring patters. As you get further away from intersecting the center of the log, those rings start to rotate. Eventually you'd get rift-sawn. It gets even trickier, because "rift sawing", the process, is also sometimes called "true quartersawn". My guess is that Kiesel uses what would be considered both "quarter" and "rift" lumber, resulting from the "quarter" process, given how "swirly" some of their fretboards come out, almost looking like pale moon ebony (whose striping actually has little to do with grain/ring patterns) Basically, the tighter the stripes are together, and the fewer lines you see on the side/edge, the more "quarter" the lumber is. As the stripes get wider, you're more likely to see strips on the side, that's more "rift" lumber, and both can come from the "quarter" sawing processing, while you only get "quarter sawn" from the "rift" sawn process.

At least...that's my understanding from my own armature research when preparing to mill my own backyard logs earlier in the year.

Here's a walk-through Jeff just did on Instagram. More than most other walk-throughs, you see lots and lots of their "raw" wood. Shelves full of billets, strap-clamped stacks of maple tops in and out of the kilns, a brand new plastic-wrapped pallet of solid royal ebony that had just come in, etc.

Looks like some new Kiesel picks coming? (Assuming that's what it'll be, based in the "Dunlop" label on the side of the case pack.

Yeah, that looks like the JD pick tin. I'm assuming they're going to be selling those as tins of Kiesel picks, not including free picks with customer guitars.
