?? AAT Ash Body with Black Stain??

Postby redhulk62 » Tue Jun 21, 2022 5:41 pm

Hey Guys!!

Curious if anyone has a swamp ash AAT with Black Stain??
I m thinking about getting this on an Aries and possibly going to ask for a thin KRG burst around the top wood (but wondering if it wpuld.be too much) then black trans on the bevel.

Anyways. Really curious to see if anyone has the black stain on ash. Any pics would be awesome!!!

Also thoughts on Gloss vs Satin??

I love all the options but definitely overwhelming sometimes.

I was told that you can't combine AAT with any of the stains because it's stain over stain and doesn't turn out well. You can do trans black (or any sprayed trans color) over AAT, but it will be be harder to see the contrast of the grain in anything but the brightest lights. That's a common issue with any darker trans color when it's not over flame/quilt. You may not need AAT with to get the same effect as with just black stain because the nature of the stains is they soak more heavily into the grain which does make the grain darker than the rest of the wood.

If you really want a color over AAT to make it black over black, you would want a custom trans gray rather than black, if you want more contrast between the lighter color and the grain. Or you go with a raw tone finish where by not having a perfectly smooth surface, the light makes the grain pop more. Same concept of how you can see the grain really well on a jet black raw tone, even though it's all solid satin black.

Also, don't forget about blacked out ash is an option too.

For reference, look at how the raspberry jam stain looks over swamp ash, there's no AAT here. Because of how the stain is absorbed you do get light and dark.

Gloss vs satin

Other than the obvious sheen satin will ding easily than gloss. All my electrics are gloss (I’m a clumsy) and my acoustic electrics are satin.
My Kiesel/Carvin collection: ST300 (M22SD bridge, S60A middle, Twin Blade neck), SCB6 (S22B bridge, S22J neck), Bolt Classic (Mark’s Singles in all positions), SH550 (S22T in the neck and bridge), CS3 Goldtop (Beryllium bridge and Gambale neck), AC375, CL450 and CC275 12 String.
