Bye bye BBS :(

Postby wickid » Tue Sep 13, 2022 8:22 am

Since I cannot reply to the official announcement (thanks for posting that Spud), I just wanted to say thanks for the memories of the Carvin / Kiesel BBS. Gonna miss ya. I realize why not allowing replies, and I do not want to cross any lines - no b*chen.

I wanna thank Kev and all at C / K for hosting this resource for so long. This has been my place to go (and constantly refresh) to clear my head from work and check out whats going on in my favorite hobby "source". I kinda feel like when my local brew pub just closed up this summer (they never fully recovered from loss of biz due to covid, so that was different). I needed to take a knee.
I realize I'm not their target demo, as I'm not on Facebook, and the group there is private. I'll have to weigh signing up, but may just forgo that. Hasnt really been for me before. But I'm in the minority. I may drop by the Instagram page (if I recall the link) to check out new axe porn. :coolpics:

At some point I may order another Delos or something, and the builder is there for that, as well as "call their guys".
So, respectfully,
Adios, arrivederci, vaya con dios, …
hasta manana.
Its been real.

Proud Carvin owner since 1985! My Carvin gear time capsule...

This little corner of the internet has been a refreshing oasis of knowledge and civility. Sad to see go, but it’s totally understandable and giving a a little time to get our minds around it rather than just yanking the carpet out from under us was a classy move. Not a fb guy myself, so here’s wishing the best for y’all.

This has long been the only site I regularly frequent, other than FB and Wordle.

It will be missed.

I signed up at the Carvin Museum 20 years ago and came here soon after. Kind of a strange feeling to have see this era ending.

Oh geez.... sad to see this forum die. I've enjoyed the insight that everyone has provided over the years. I guess I need to make one last crawl through and capture a few more of the cool build pics you guys have shared.

Take care all,
DWG

Wellp, I'm not on most social media, so I guess this is a goodbye of sorts. I'll miss a lot of you old-timers, and definitely miss the people who left years ago. If anyone wants to be in touch, feel free to PM me, I'll do the same.

I find it difficult that so much history is going to be deleted. At least archive the stuff - while the forum presentation need not remain, keeping the information alive, especially for old guitars (with the museum having gone through a rebirth and removing some information). For instance, I never would have found the back story of my blue bolt+ had it not been for these forums.

As a parting thought - even a basic Discord server might be a good idea for us old Carvinites who would want to share pictures and whatnot. I can easily make this a reality, so if there's any interest, just reach out, I'll make it happen. Might be real simple, but it would be better than the oblivion otherwise being face.

Just some thoughts - hate to see this die, though it has been pretty slow for a long time. "Progress is regress."
We are entitled to our own, wrong, opinions.

Guitar theorem: G=X+1 where G= guitars one needs, and X = guitars one has.

Do or do not; there is no understand.

I've been wracking my brain trying to think of a way to "archive" information from here, but so much of it just comes from conversations, where the only two ways to "archive" would be to somehow save a static "snapshot" of the entire forum and host it somewhere (but it couldn't be "live" as all internal links would be broken), or going through, thread-by-thread, 26226 times, and taking notes.

I've asked a couple places for ways to try to do the former, but what little info I've found is all above my head.

Kevio's been working on that new museum site, and has plans to continue adding more and more information and functionality (and at least for now, the old version of the site is still up and linked to from the KieselMuseum home page) when he can. Though, given the general internet-wide trend of dropping usage of forums, I wouldn't expect the effort/cost to make/host/moderate a new one would be worthwhile. :(

On my phone, I only have 5 bookmarks saved in the browser:
1- My own etsy shop manager page
2- Wordle
3- My RiffTrax library page (because I usually put one on to fall asleep most nights)
4- Kiesel BBS

I'm sad to see this go. It's the only guitar forum I visit. I totally understand Kiesel shutting it down. We've all talked about declining participation over the years so it makes sense. Aaarrghhh!!!!

For whatever it's worth:
IG: Defective_Monk
FB: San Tim. I'm on several Kiesel groups there.

Hope to see y'all out there. Thanks everyone for years of insight and great conversations about these guitars.

Is anyone else on any other guitar BBSs and if so what's your handle name on those?

Considering joining somewhere else that hopefully is as sensible as this one was.

Thanks!

You must be new to the internet. :laughhard: Ha! I kid, I kid...sorta...

The KieselGuitars Carvin Guitars Group on Facebook is good for people sharing photos, it's where you see the most New Guitar Day posts (just about daily), lots of people sharing photos of their favorites from years passed (past?...not sure which would be the right word here...) Tons of people sharing clips of themselves jamming to licks, cover songs, live performances, playthroughs, etc. This is different than Kiesel's own Facebook account, where only they can post, but anyone can reply. The Group linked above, any group member can make a new post. (except maybe there's some limit for brand new members)

It was started by random folks, but it's been absorbed into Kiesel's stable of social media presences, so Flock, Jesse, Brandon post there off and on, Zakk too sometimes.

Then there's also the Kiesel Owner's Group which is much smaller and slower-paced, but it's just run by fans. (who do all also post over in the main Kiesel group.

On Facebook, I'm Scott Janzer, but my entire FB friends list is people I've at least met in person, and Jason Becker...so don't feel bad if I ignore a "Friend" request over there.

The only other guitar forum/BBS I frequent is sevenstring.org. Now, this one's a bit dicey for a number of reasons. One, is that it's an open forum for all sorts of music and a huge non-music section, which includes a "Politics" section. There's lots of spillover into other parts of the forum from those threads. And while there is a "Carvin/Kiesel Thread", which sometimes goes a bit off the rails it does come back to "normal" conversation fairly quickly, partly because there's also a "Kiesel --- Never Again!" thread, where some of that venting can be more consolidated. It's not like legitimate complaints in the normal thread aren't tolerated, but some people like to pile on and that's what the "never again" thread is better for...people who just want to ask about an option don't need to wade through someone's 10th re-telling of a bad experience in 2013, and people who do have a story to tell can tell it in one place so it feels more like an echo chamber of sorts. There's Kiesel NGD threads every couple of weeks or so, but the Kiesel thread itself goes in spurts. Someone will post a new option or model or question, there's a few replies, and then it's quiet for a while. I'm Spudmunkey over there, too.

LOL!!!! I know....I know. I'm only on 2 BBSs. Both are very rational, normal, human beings talking...and this one is shutting down. The other one is a scifi BBS.

Oh hi Scott!!! I'm San Tim on FB. I'm on some of those groups you mention and I do comment once in a while on those. I'm even on a Kiesel Headless FB page. Talk about specific.

Btw, sent you a PM on this a couple of days ago but don't know if I did that correctly. Just checking.

Edited repost from another thread:

I joined in 2007 and this is my 1363rd post. Though I've made my thoughts on Jeff and the direction of the company rather (and perhaps inelegantly at times) clear, I've always appreciated this forum as a great source of information not just for Carvin/Kiesel guitars, but for the instrument in general.

I've got lots of fond memories of this place and I'm sad to see it go. From seeing the emergence of the "Cowbell" term, Evster's Photoshop mockups, all the great NGDs, advice, arguments, and support I've seen, I'm glad to have been part of this community since nearly its inception.

I'm not sure if this will be my last post or not, but in the event it is, I want to say that Elf and Spud are princely men and I'd like to thank them for all they've done for this forum and community over the years. Godspeed.

I'm on Facebook as the real me, Lane Adamson. My friends list is an odd mixture of family, coworkers, writers, musicians, and gun nuts. My posts are mostly bad jokes, food, and more bad jokes. Feel free to drop in and say "howdy."
