I could be wrong, but I think the "select" finishes are based on some sort of stain/dye rather than a transparent paint.

I've learned that satin works best for solid colors, especially strong / bright ones. In those cases, it does amplify the intensity of the color. For figured tops, you need gloss. Satin as you saw tends to make the figuring a bit duller, you loose the contrast and depth.

It comes down to how satin lets light pass through, that combo of refraction and diffusion. Great for color, bad for detail.

This is a pretty good example of how a wood with strong figuring, like black limba, looks in the same color in both satin and gloss.

Yes, I believe that is the case.

Return was accepted, and I put in the new order this week.
The bass I sent back is up on the Guitars in Stock page - even with their pro photography and lighting, it looks, well, black.

Wowwwww yeah that's just straight black without really knowing what you're looking at, you'd go right by that and think they messed up the specs list....still a rad bass.

I would do a Caliburst with some kind of magenta without the black edges and also suggest to choose gloss finish. I have 3 basses - 2 with gloss - aqua and night burs - both beautiful!

Matt finishes will not show the flamed top so well.
